Coniferous compositions
Tall conifers are unlikely to be suitable for a house flowerbed, because the overgrown tree will block the light, and the roots will not have enough free space. But compact junipers, dwarf varieties of firs, neat thujas can be used to decorate a flowerbed. Such flowerbeds are unpretentious and equally attractive at any time of the year.
The most suitable option for a flowerbed along the house is a horizontal composition. The basis is made up of plants of the same height. Mountain pine, Cossack juniper, Alberta Globe spruce are suitable for low flowerbeds, while Lawson cypress, Glauca Compacta pine, etc. are suitable for higher ones.
If the task is to block excess light or hide the facade from prying eyes as much as possible, a hedge can be built from conifers. A thuja, which can be planted solo or in company with barberry, will easily cope with this task.
Rose garden
Fans of climbing roses often strive to decorate one of the walls of the house with them. In order not to fill the foundation, they make a blind area 50-70 cm wide in advance. For young roses, supports are installed from small trellises, and over time, the fastening is transferred to the facade.
Ground cover varieties of roses can also be safely used for a flowerbed near the wall. They grow quickly, bloom profusely, and the aroma will be felt not only in the garden, but also in the house. When choosing roses for your plot, it is important to pay attention to several characteristics:
- Frost resistance;
- Duration of flowering;
- Growth rate;
The last criterion allows the bushes to recover faster after a difficult winter.
Topiary
Bright and original decoration of the local area – shrub sculptures. Experiments with form here can only be limited by the imagination of the owner of the site. Balls and pyramids are adjacent to fairy-tale characters, animal figures with labyrinths. Simple forms look better next to the house, fantasy ones should be given a ceremonial place in the center of the site.
Topiary is often based on coniferous plants, but there are many suitable plants among deciduous shrubs. Elm, linden, hawthorn, barberry, honeysuckle, etc. will do. For simple flower beds, it will be enough to trim the bushes in time, for more complex ones, you will have to build a metal frame.
Hosta flower beds
Beautiful, lush hosta bushes often decorate summer cottages’ ponds, but they are also used along fences and walls look no worse. The plant does not tolerate strong sunlight, so it takes root better on the north side of the house. The leaves are large and wide, so there is no need to plant the hosta close to the foundation. At the same time, it is completely undemanding to the soil and care and already in the second year after planting it is able to fully demonstrate its decorative qualities.
Hosta fits harmoniously into the company of primroses, small shrubs, lushly blooming hydrangeas and geyheras, but solitary planting looks no less attractive. To create a flower bed near the house, you can use several varieties at once. Dwarf and tall, single-color and bordered hostas are successfully combined in one composition.
Peonies
Peonies are distinguished by lush, delicate inflorescences and bright foliage, so they feel self-sufficient in solo compositions. The variety of shades allows you to fit flowers into the space next to the house as laconically as possible. White, soft pink or cream varieties are suitable for a bright facade. Juicy crimson, burgundy and scarlet peonies will help to enliven an unsightly exterior.
Flowerbeds of bulbous plants
Tulips, crocuses, daffodils, and goose onions are often used to frame garden paths, fences, and decorate the area near walls. Most of them bloom with the melting of snow and the first warmth of spring, and are distinguished by their bright colors and pleasant aroma.
The flowering periods of bulbous plants vary dramatically, so by combining several plants in a flowerbed, you can get a flowerbed of continuous flowering. Tall varieties are placed closer to the facade, and low ones are placed further away.
Mixborders
If you want everything at once, you should give preference to a mixborder. Here, compact shrubs are adjacent to perennial flowers and ornamental grasses. Flowerbeds are distinguished by their multi-row and multi-tiered nature. Flowers are selected so that the decorative effect of the composition is preserved from early spring until the first frost.
When choosing seeds and seedlings for decorating a flowerbed along the wall, it is worth paying attention to plants with beautiful, lush greenery. They will decorate the area even in between flowering.
