Features of choosing a wardrobe

When choosing a wardrobe, you should always focus on the area and characteristics of the room:

  • On a narrow balcony, the product should fill the space so as not to interfere with free passage.
  • On an open balcony, unlike a glazed loggia, you should not place wardrobes made of materials that are unstable to environmental influences.
  • You should pay attention to whether the doors open conveniently enough, whether there is enough space for them.

Options for arranging wardrobes

The main task of competently placing a wardrobe on a balcony is to save space without losing functionality. Depending on the layout, the furniture can be placed in the corner (the most common option is when the back wall adjoins the wall) or under the window, if the loggia is wide enough.

An original way to place a wardrobe is in the floor. For this purpose, a podium is built, in which you can put things, and also use it as a sleeping place.

Types of balcony cabinets

Let’s consider several common types of furniture for storing things on the balcony.

Wardrobe

Keeping in mind the space saving, this product can be called the optimal choice for a loggia. Sliding doors do not take up space, and mirrors, which are often used to decorate them, visually expand the space.

Wardrobe with shelves

If the owner of the apartment wants to make the balcony more comfortable or demonstrate his good taste, a model with shelves inside or on the sides will perfectly serve for placing decor and flowers.

Built-in

By type of construction, wardrobes are divided into free-standing (cabinet) and built-in (hidden), which fit into the space, without attracting attention, but require more complex installation.

Wall-mounted

The main advantage of such furniture is the “airiness” effect. This makes it easier to perceive a rather bulky product in a modest-sized room.

With hinged doors

The most popular and inexpensive option. The downside of this product is that the open doors take up too much space and can rest against the window sill or block the doorway.

With roller shutters

A suitable solution for practical people. The roller shutters are easily raised and lowered by means of a reliable mechanism. They are rarely used in living spaces because they look unusual and are expensive.

Combined models

There are cases when saving space is not a priority task when decorating a balcony. If the main goal is to arrange a comfortable and multifunctional relaxation area, it is worth considering ordering combined designs. If the loggia is closed and insulated, with the help of a cabinet-seat it can be transformed into a separate room, and in the company of a table – into a summer kitchen. This is especially relevant for owners of small Khrushchev-era apartments.

Shelf

This is a multi-tiered structure without doors. Usually installed on balconies for storing seedlings or flowers that need sunlight. Shelves are also appropriate on closed loggias, but it is worth considering that an abundance of things on the shelves overloads the decor.

Cabinet

This small cabinet is a good option for those who do not want to take up the entire wall with a large structure, but need a place to store a minimum number of things.

Sizes and shapes of cabinets for a loggia

Owners of a spacious balcony have a wide range of options: the layout allows you to place a large cabinet or even a radius (“bent”) structure. You don’t have to worry about saving space and choose hinged doors or a three-leaf “accordion” that open outward.

On small loggias, low and shallow cabinets are more appropriate.

Low cabinet Low cabinet with seat

If the balcony is panoramic, then an ordinary cabinet will block part of the window. The solution to this situation is to install a corner product. The photo shows that even small models can look different: it can be an open rack with semicircular shelves or a straight wardrobe with sliding doors. Also, a triangular design is often used in irregularly shaped rooms.

Color Examples

Neutral furniture colors are the most popular for decorating a loggia: beige will fit well into a setting decorated in warm tones. Calm gray will also suit discreet but stylish interiors, and universal white will be appropriate in any combination.

Lovers of bright, cheerful interiors often use yellow or even red shades: colored furniture acts as an accent and distracts attention from the modest size of the room. Cool colors (blue, mint) are used less often – in our climate, residents, on the contrary, strive to “lure” more sun onto the balcony, including with the help of warm shades in the decor.

What material is best to choose for a loggia?

Over time, furniture on unheated loggias is exposed to external factors: humidity, UV radiation, mold. The best solution in this case is to insulate the balcony, but if this is not possible, wear-resistant materials should be chosen. Manufacturers offer the following types of cabinets:

  • plastic;
  • chipboard/laminated chipboard;
  • wooden;
  • metal.

Solid wood furniture is more expensive than plastic, but is less resistant to moisture (unless it is thermally treated wood). Plastic can deform over time due to temperature changes, and metal products are subject to corrosion. Most often, furniture made of laminated chipboard or MDF is installed on balconies: the top layer of plastic protects the chipboard from wear, and in case of damage, budget models can always be replaced.

Let’s move away from the topic of practicality and consider a cabinet as an item that will give the loggia a special character and help decorate the interior.

A product with glass facades looks expensive and elegant. If the balcony is open, the glass protects personal items from dust or rain. Cabinets with louvered doors, on the contrary, look solid and give a feeling of coziness.

If the layout allows, two cabinets can be placed on the balcony. White glossy facades will help to slightly expand the space by reflecting light.

Filling the cabinet on the balcony

When choosing furniture for a loggia, it is recommended to think in advance about what will be stored in it. A cabinet on an insulated balcony can turn into a wardrobe or become a storage for books. A thrifty family will use it for tools or canned goods.

Photos of a loggia in different styles

When choosing a suitable model, you should think about the style in which you want to fit the closet, then it will become a real “highlight” of the interior.

Rough textures of facades and metal are suitable for an “industrial” loft. Laconic but functional shelving units, as well as products with glass doors, will fit into a modern style. Homey, cozy Provence, on the contrary, recognizes the richness of textures: facades similar to shutters, wickerwork and wooden boxes.
