Classic Bathroom Curtains

Curtains made of soft materials, such as fabric impregnated with a water-repellent compound or thick PVC film, have long been common in our bathrooms. To transform the design of the bathroom, sometimes it is enough to change such a curtain.

Curtain Fastening Options

Classic fabric curtains differ in the way they are attached to the guides.

  • Clothespins. Clothespins, which are called “crocodiles”, have their pros and cons. An obvious advantage is that it is not necessary to make holes in the curtain for fastenings. Cons: metal “crocodiles” quickly rust in the humid air of the bathroom, lose their appearance and stain the curtain, in addition, if the curtain is opened abruptly, they can “release” the curtain.

  • Rings. Rings or hooks are put on the curtain rod, threaded through specially made holes in the curtains. In store-bought shower curtains, these holes are usually reinforced for added strength.

  • Eyelets. This is the most elegant, but at the same time expensive type of fastening. Holes are made in the fabric, which are bordered with metal plates. The holes are of such a size that the fastening rod can easily pass through them. This solution looks very stylish and modern, and also ensures unhindered sliding of the curtain.

  • Magnetic clips. Fabric loops are supplied with rivets at the ends with magnets embedded inside. Usually they have a decorative appearance and can decorate the structure that isolates the wet area. The curtain is secured by grabbing it with clamps and threading the rod through the resulting loops. The magnets fit quite tightly together, and the curtain holds well. However, this type of fastening is not recommended for heavy fabrics.

  • Pocket. A “pocket” is made at the top edge of the curtain by tucking it in and hemming it so that the rod fits freely into the resulting space. The curtain is put on the rod, threading it through the resulting “sleeve”, and then secured in the designated place. This method has a significant disadvantage – the curtain moves along the guide with difficulty, but this drawback can be eliminated by using curtain tiebacks.

  • Ceiling cornice. The curtain can be fixed with a ceiling cornice – a solution common for living rooms, and very rarely used in the bathroom. By equipping the curtain with chains or cords attached on one side to the curtain itself, and on the other, with hooks, to the cornice, you can get a very original and decorative option for decorating a bathroom.

Materials for curtains

The most common and reliable material for a bathroom curtain is polyester. This is a polyester polymer, quite soft and pleasant to the touch. It is easy to wash, durable, resistant to aggressive chemicals and practically impermeable to water vapor and splashes.

Its moisture-proof properties can be increased by impregnating it with a special composition, while the service life of such fabric is at least ten years. The curtains are easy to care for, they can withstand both hand and machine washing, while the temperature should not be higher than 40 degrees. The curtains can be ironed, making sure that the iron is not hot.

Fabric curtains look very decorative, but a mandatory condition for using them in the bathroom is moisture-proof impregnation. The size of the curtains is selected depending on the size of the bathroom, as well as the desired decorative effect. For example, the length can be “floor-length”, or to the edge of the bathtub, or to the middle of the bathtub’s height.

The color scheme is chosen in accordance with the design of the room, and can be either calm, background, or bright, acting as the main decorative accent. In the latter case, you can choose curtains with active graphic or national patterns, or decorated with photo prints.

Whatever material you choose, a bathroom equipped with such curtains will look luxurious, and caring for it will not require much effort and time, because the curtains just need to be washed and ironed.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds are usually used to decorate windows in kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, and summer terraces. However, they are also very appropriate in the bathroom, as they allow you to save space – just raise the curtain to the ceiling.

The material for roller blinds that are supposed to be used in the bathroom must withstand water, so the fabric must be treated with a water-repellent compound. Dirt does not stick to this fabric, so it is easy to care for: just wipe it with a sponge and detergent and rinse with water.

So far, roller blinds are used quite rarely in bathrooms, and it is difficult to find a suitable illustration. However, it is easy to imagine how it will look if you look at the curtain you like in the interior of a living room or kitchen.

Glass partitions for bathroom

Fixed glass partitions

Glass partitions, fixed permanently, are quite convenient to use. They are made of tempered glass, such protective devices are completely safe to use. Fixed partitions usually cover part of the shower cabins, and are also installed on the bathtub – up to half of its length.

Glass does not let water through at all, even if it is poured in a straight stream. Glass for making partitions can be both transparent and matte, have a pattern or relief surface, which makes it possible to create various interior solutions.

Sliding glass partitions

Glass partitions that move along special guides are often used in shower cabins. Such a design can reach from the floor to the ceiling, or to the edge of the bathtub – if installed on it. This allows you to completely isolate the wet area, but the installation of such a system requires the participation of specialists, since the ease of moving the movable glass walls will depend on the accuracy of the installation of the guides.

Sliding partitions are quite demanding in maintenance, each time after washing you will have to carefully wipe all the parts of the structure to avoid the appearance of a deposit of hardness salts and rust, which impede the movement of the sashes.

Glass doors

The wet area in the bathroom can be separated from the rest of the room with a glass wall with doors, which will be a much more practical solution than curtains. In this case, water and condensation are guaranteed not to get beyond the wet zone. You should pay attention to the quality of the metal elements of the structure – profiles, fasteners, handles: rusty spots on tiles and glass will not decorate the room.
