When can you place your bed with its headboard facing the window?
When deciding to follow Western fashion and place your bed by the window, you should take into account a number of inconveniences that you will have to face:
- Sounds from the street are most audible near an open window. Most likely, a busy street will interfere with a good night’s sleep, as will the unpleasant smells of dust and gas pollution in large cities. To reduce the noise level in the room, you will have to close the windows at night.
- Bright sunlight falling on the bed can be the cause of lack of sleep if the room is on the east side. The window in the bedroom will have to be covered with blinds or thick curtains that will block the morning rays and not let in hot air.
- If the double-glazed windows are panoramic, then most likely, in winter, piercing streams of cold will penetrate from them and it will be easy to get a draft through your back.
- If a radiator is installed under the window, as standard, it will dry out the air. Place a flower next to it. It will provide oxygen and grow well in daylight.
However, if other placement does not fit into the layout of the room and the bed has to be placed by the window, choose a high headboard. It will help to alleviate the above-described disadvantages. In this case, use the advice and examples of designers regarding successful zoning of the bedroom.
It is worth mentioning narrow, elongated rooms, where the window is located on a small wall. There is no technical possibility to place the bed across, so there is no other option but to place it by the window.
In what cases is it forbidden to place a bed near a window?
Eastern teachings say that it is good to sleep with your head to the east, following the natural course of the celestial bodies. According to the teachings of Feng Shui, as well as from a practical point of view, there are options for planning a bedroom when placing a bed near a window is highly undesirable:
- With the foot of the bed facing the front door. This is believed to be the position of a deceased person.
- Opposite the mirror, if the sleeping person falls in its reflection. According to beliefs, it takes away strength and does not allow you to get a good night’s sleep.
- If there is a door on the same wall as the window in the room. It will be uncomfortable for you to get up from your bed to see who has entered.
- Under a slope, a low ceiling, a ceiling beam, massive objects (shelves, chandeliers). All this creates an invisible feeling of pressure on the human body, interfering with healthy sleep.
- On the same line exactly between the window and the doorway. In this case, you will get sick more often from drafts. Or you will have to block the air flow with a closet.
- Experts do not recommend placing the headboard in the bedroom near the radiator.
- For small children and teenagers, it is not advisable to place the bed in the room near the windowsill. It would be better to put a desk there for studying.
It is also impractical to have a sleeping area with its foot close to the wall.
Designer recommendations
Modern layouts in houses with Attic bedrooms or lofts can include an alcove in the rooms. This is not the best place to install a bed. The niche will constantly lack oxygen, which will leave a negative impression of the rest. It is better to arrange a corner for contemplating the scenery or reading books in the alcove.
If you have a studio apartment and decided to put the bed under the window, it is worth highlighting an entire relaxation or sleep zone, separating it with a podium and emphasizing the modern style or loft.
The most successful placement of the bed in the room by the window is considered if the double-glazed windows decorate the bay window. In the classic interior style, they are selected arched, creating a truly large royal bed for sleeping in the bedroom. By the way, in this case, the bed can be placed so that you can contemplate the landscapes through the window, especially if you are the owner of an apartment with panoramic glazing.
When implementing country or Provence style in a room, it will be a plus to decorate the bed with a light chiffon canopy in calm warm colors.
