Characteristic features of the style
Unlike the original European styles that originated in French villages or English mansions, boho originates in the region of Bohemia (Czech Republic), where free nomadic gypsies called Bohemians lived back in the 17th century. The term bohemia, demonstrating the gypsy-like lifestyle of the creative intelligentsia, also originated from them.
The boho style in design is recognizable at first glance, because it has a number of distinctive features:
- A large amount of textiles. Pillows, blankets, rugs, throws, even decor like tapestries or macrame. Fabric decorations should not just be there, there should be a lot of them.
- Open storage. A multitude of cute little things on shelves or in racks merge into a single creative mess.
- Combination of the incompatible. To maintain the atmosphere of style, you do not need to follow the rules: combine any shades, patterns, details. The main thing is that the resulting picture reflects the inner world of the owners.
- Natural materials. The design uses a lot of wood, wool, paper, and brick.
In general, boho in the interior is eclectic – it combines ultra-fashionable elements with vintage furniture, warm wood with painted brick, bright colors with neutral tones.
Types of boho
How exactly boho will look in interior design depends primarily on what it is added to.
Scandinavian boho
Scandinavian style is famous for its love of cozy space, but instead of a flashy palette, it prefers restrained white, gray, beige tones.
A mixture of boho and scandi turns out to be calm, conducive to relaxation in the hygge style.
Boho-chic
Boho-chic is considered standard of boho style in the interior of the apartment. Bohemian chic combines natural shades with brighter, more saturated colors. In boho-chic interiors, original metal and glass accents are often found.
Glamorous boho
Best suited to the description “modern boho in the interior”. Glamour “combs” the carelessness of the bohemian trend, but preserves favorite patterns, bright colors, and varied textiles.
Boho-loft
If any trend was destined to merge with the boho style in the interior of the house, it is industrial. Both styles were created by free creative youth, so their combination looks very harmonious. Boho brings color and fabric to loft, loft shares rough textures.
Boho-classic
Despite the fact that classic and bohemian are as far from each other as hippies are from aristocrats, the mix turned out to be successful. From the classic style it has strict lines, symmetry. From bohemian – multi-colored paints, little things that create coziness.
Eco-boho
In fact, due to the love of wood and living plants, any style direction can be called eco-friendly. But if we take a pure eco direction, it will be somewhat reminiscent of Scandi: a restrained palette, a large number of potted flowers, natural fabrics.
Boho-hippie
Many people believe that hippies are the ancestors of the style, but as you already know, this is not so. Hippies only brought some recognizable features to it: geometric patterns, handmade accessories.
What color scheme to use?
The palette of boho style can be divided into 2 large groups: neutral and bright.
The first includes shades of white, gray, sand with small splashes of green, yellow, blue. Such interiors look natural, comfortable, and are made in the Scandi or eco sub-styles.
Rich shades allow you to create an interesting unique design, suitable for people who do not are afraid of color and like to surround themselves with unusual things. It can be done in two versions: a single-color light finish + colored furniture in the boho style, decor, or a completely colorful room.
What to consider when choosing a finish?
Most often, repairs are limited to painting the walls and ceiling in a single color, laying a wooden floor.
The shade of the walls can be light – it will be an excellent background for bright decor in the boho style, or colorful, matching all the elements of the room.
One of the vertical surfaces can be made an accent by choosing abstract or geometric wallpaper, or by painting it in a bright shade.
Don’t forget about textures: brick walls or wooden ceilings will suit the style.
What furniture is suitable?
Vintage sofas, cabinets and sideboards are best suited as boho style furniture. If you prefer to buy new, pay attention to the upholstery: matting, suede and eco-leather are suitable for Scandi. Brighter directions will be decorated with a colored sofa in velour, velvet, tapestry.
Upholstered furniture is not only a sofa. Chairs or armchairs in boho style can be from the same set with the ottoman or, on the contrary, accentuate attention. For the latter, choose wicker models or options with acid upholstery, an unusual print.
The arrangement of living rooms will not do without poufs of different shapes and sizes: put several near the bed, sofa or armchair, use as a bench or coffee table.
Cabinet boho furniture should also be old: various chests of drawers, secretaries, and pedestals with scuffs will harmoniously fit into the interior.
Recommendations for choosing decor and textiles
Boho decor is the calling card of the style. Most attention is paid to textiles: decorative pillows, bedspreads, and blankets are a must on the sofa and bed. A carpet on the floor, macrame or tapestry on the wall, and curtains on the window.
Advice! Use the principle of layering to make the compositions look more harmonious.
Non-textile decor includes figurines, vases, mirrors, paintings or photos in frames, other wall decor (antlers and skulls, world maps, dream catchers).
To create a tasteful design, combine all the details in the composition according to one common feature: color, shape, texture.
How does it look in the interior of the rooms?
When the soul longs for freedom, but there is no certainty that boho is the ideal style, decorate one room of the house and see: does this design suit you?
Living room in boho style
Of course, the main accent of the hall was, is and will be the sofa. And in boho it is additionally highlighted with the help of sofa cushions. A coffee table, pouf or armchair would not be out of place in the room. The walls are occupied by paintings, tapestries, plants in hanging pots.
Kitchen in boho style
Bohemian kitchen is somewhat reminiscent of a mixture of country and loft. The main rule is to say “no” to minimalism: beautiful plates, jars, books, pots should be in plain sight, not hidden in cabinets.
Bet on texture: a brick wall, an oriental-style apron, wooden paneling.
Bedroom in boho style
If any room needs a special atmosphere of comfort, it is the bedroom. To create the perfect environment for sleep and rest with your own hands, do not skimp on textiles: make your bed not with one bedspread, but with 3-4 of different colors or sizes. Place not one personal pillow on top, but 3-6.
Boho hallway
Boho interior is not so much about practicality as about comfort: if you want to a cozy apartment greeted you at the threshold, refuse bulky wardrobes in favor of consoles, benches, open hooks.
Bathroom room
With bright towels, wooden details and fresh flowers, even a cold tiled bathroom will become cozy and “soft”.
Children’s room
Bohemian style nursery decor will help to envelop your baby in care and guarantee him a peaceful sleep. The only downside is that when the baby starts crawling or walking, you will have to put the pretty baskets on the open shelves higher up.
Boho style in the interior of the balcony
Boho is one of the few trends that allow you to make your loggia more comfortable with virtually no investment. You can even build a seat and a flower rack from old pallets, and the plants and textiles themselves are relatively inexpensive.
Don’t be afraid of bold experiments and the manifestation of feelings: this is the only way you can reflect your inner world in the interior and show your individuality.
