Brick in the interior: finishing methods

Brickwork can be used for finishing in various ways:

  • Fragment. The masonry makes up a small part of the wall, emphasizing the solidity of the walls of the house. This technique is used, for example, in the Scandinavian style.

  • Accent. Brickwork is used to highlight a part of the wall that you want to draw special attention to. This can be the location of the TV panel, part of the wall behind the headboard, a fireplace area, etc.

  • Wall. A wall made entirely of brick in the interior can also look very decorative. Usually, this is how the part of the room that carries the main semantic load is highlighted. In the living room, this could be the wall next to the sofa, in the bedroom – the wall behind the headboard, in the kitchen – the wall next to the dining area.

  • Element. Individual architectural elements can be built from brick. This could be an arch or, for example, a section of a free-standing wall that can serve as the base of a bar counter or a stand for an aquarium. Brick is also used to make zoning partitions in studio apartments.

The main disadvantage of brick as a finishing material is its significant weight and volume. In small rooms, brick will “eat up” a significant amount of space, which is undesirable. In such situations, you can use materials that imitate brickwork. A brick-like wall in the interior of a small room will create the desired impression without reducing its area.

Brick color in interior design

The surface of brickwork is usually treated to remove excess porosity, make cleaning easier, and fit it into the style of the room as harmoniously as possible. If it is necessary to leave the natural masonry, it is covered with transparent compounds. But more often brick walls are painted, choosing the most suitable color in each specific case. Nothing prevents you from making the brickwork green, purple or pink, but the most commonly used are traditional “brick” colors.

White brick in the interior

White is the color most often used in minimalist and Scandinavian styles. In both of these styles, brick surfaces are the element that allows you to enrich the interior with minimal means – their texture. At the same time, they try to remove the color so as not to overload the visual perception. A great solution in such cases is to paint the finished masonry white.

White additionally gives the effect of increasing the space, which is important in cases where the area of the room is small. In addition, a white brick wall can serve as a wonderful background for demonstrating decorative elements of the interior. A white brick wall can be combined in one room with “traditional” masonry.

Gray brick in the interior

Gray, like white, is considered neutral. It creates a calm background for displaying furniture and decorative design elements. Depending on its saturation, gray can play different roles in a room.

Light gray will expand the space and slightly muffle the brightness; this color is appropriate for painting brickwork in rooms that are too brightly lit. Dark gray will add chamberness and intimacy, create a calming atmosphere, although at the same time it will visually conceal the volume.

Red brick in the interior

As a rule, “red” is the name given to shades of ordinary brick made of clay. Although nothing prevents you from painting the masonry red if the design idea requires it. Red brick walls are appropriate in almost all styles, including Gothic and classical. As a rule, they immediately attract attention and become the main decorative element of the interior.

The red brick walls no longer need additional decorations. It is worth keeping in mind that some pieces of furniture may “get lost” against their background, for example, a simple table made of wood of a similar tone may be almost invisible.

Brick in the interior of the room: in which rooms is it appropriate

Elements of brickwork can be integrated into any room, from the entrance area to the bathroom or toilet. The main thing is to choose an option that will perfectly match the furniture and other decoration.

Hallway

Here, brickwork will help to separate the entrance area from the rest, either with a rich brick texture on the walls, or with a free-standing brick partition, if the area allows. You can decorate with brickwork a section of the wall in the hallway, allocated for a clothes hanger, thereby highlighting it as a separate zone. Console tables for gloves and other small items look spectacular near a brick wall, above which a large mirror is hung.

Kitchen

Most often in the kitchen, brickwork serves as an “apron” near the work surface. Here, as a rule, decorative brick is used, which has special characteristics and a smooth surface, which makes cleaning easier.

You can also highlight the dining area, bar counter, and island table in the kitchen with masonry.

Living room

A brick partition can be used to separate the living room area from the rest of the apartment with an open plan. In addition, false columns are faced with brick, and the wall near the fireplace is laid out. The sofa or TV area is also separated with brickwork.

Bedroom

Here, brick is most often used to decorate the wall at the head of the bed, emphasizing its special significance in the interior with its texture. Another popular option is to accentuate the wall with a window with masonry. In small rooms, it is better to give over to brick not the entire wall, but only a part of it, so as not to weigh down the perception of space.

Sanitary facilities

Brick can also be used in bathrooms and toilets – there are no restrictions, the material can withstand both high temperatures and humidity. Brickwork is used to highlight different areas in a room or to separate them with partitions.

In addition, large apartments and private houses can be successfully complemented with brick arches, or brick walls near stairwells and landings.

Studio 25 sq. m.

In order to avoid large expenses on renovating the studio, the walls were painted and the furniture was purchased from IKEA. In order to enhance the decorative effect, the wall near the sofa and bed was stripped down to the brickwork and painted white.
