Features and characteristics

Chalkboard paint is a decorative coating that can be used for drawing with chalk after drying.

The main difference between a chalkboard surface and any other is its matte, rough texture. It is achieved by adding the finest powder of marble, acrylic, gypsum or cement to the composition. The base of the paint and varnish material is latex. After drying, it turns into a durable film that is not afraid of water.

Pros and cons

Advantages of the material:

  • Durability. The finished design cannot be washed off with water, it is difficult to scratch.
  • Safety. Does not emit harmful substances, suitable for decorating children’s rooms.
  • Easy to apply. Chalkboard paint has excellent hiding power, it is almost impossible to apply it poorly.
  • Versatility. Can serve as a basis for creativity in a child’s room, as well as functional decor in an office.
  • High adhesion. Applied to plastered, metal, glass, plasterboard, wood and other surfaces. Application methods depend on the specific model, manufacturer.
  • Variability. The palette is not limited to green and black, a large selection of colors and tinting options allow everyone to find paint and varnish materials for their design.

In addition to the pros, there are some cons:

  • Difficult to maintain. Due to the matte texture, it is difficult to wash the black coating clean. But chalk stains, especially in combination with lettering or drawings, have their own charm.
  • Dark shade. Chalk or marker walls are typically dark – this is not appropriate in all rooms.
  • Demanding to the base. Dark matte paint will highlight all the flaws – so before painting, you will have to bring the surface to perfection.
  • High price. The price of 1 liter starts from 1,500 rubles – quite acceptable if you are going to decorate an apron with it, but not cheap for those planning to decorate an entire wall.

Use options

In recent years, chalkboard paint has found its application in design: today it is used to decorate children’s rooms, kitchens, offices and even bedrooms.

Chalkboard wall

Chalkboard wall in the interior is an original decor that will appeal to children and adults. Due to the dark range, it is often used to correct the geometry of the room – for example, if you make one of the short sides in a trailer room dark, the space will visually become more square.

Slate walls are most often found in children’s rooms, but it’s not only kids who like to draw on the walls. Cover the entire vertical surface or part of it to highlight the dining area or work area. In addition, the solution is great for decorating walls behind a sofa or bed.

It is convenient to leave messages, make drawings (an idea for seasonal decor!), write useful lists and notes on the finished coating.

Chalkboard kitchen apron

The solution in the form of a chalkboard coating in the kitchen is almost irreplaceable: it serves as an excellent place to store recipes, shopping lists, convenient storage of ideas or decoration of the room.

Most often, paint for inscriptions is used to decorate the vertical above the work area. But if you are going to paint the apron with dark matte paint, be prepared for the fact that the material perfectly absorbs grease and other dirt – so if you are not ready to wash the chalkboard paint every day, it is better to protect the surface with skinals. At least in the stove area.

The second way to keep the apron clean is suitable for single-tier kitchens. Above the countertop, make a regular apron made of tiles or MDF, 60 cm high. And above that, you can apply a slate coating all the way to the ceiling without worrying about drops of grease.

Wall above the work area

In an apartment, it is not only in the kitchen that you need to create a place for notes: if you work at home, you have probably encountered a situation more than once when there is nowhere to write down important information. To avoid this, you can frame the table with an apron or hang a small chalkboard.

Paint furniture or appliances

If the idea of a whole black wall seems too pretentious to you, but you want to have a slate base – paint the furniture and appliances!

In the kitchen, this can be the fronts of cabinets (one, several or all), non-built-in refrigerator, dishwasher. Most often, it is the refrigerator that lends itself to creative remodeling: it is the right height for notes, and it is not that difficult to paint.

In the nursery, bedroom, living room, hallway, they paint the doors of cabinets, chests of drawers, and nightstands. An original idea for little kids: draw clothes that are in the drawers on a chest of drawers.
