Recommendations for creation
Vertical flowerbeds are picturesque compositions that stretch upward and can be filled not only with flowers, but also with herbs and berries.
The principle of creation is always the same: building a frame, arranging an irrigation system, filling with soil and planting plants. Vertical flowerbeds have a big advantage over above-ground ones, as they take up little space and fit into even the smallest area. At the same time, the flowers are open to view and do not overlap each other.
Flowerbeds are installed near fences or walls, hung on tree branches, used to decorate garden paths, and zone the area.
Not only ready-made plastic containers are suitable as a base, but also ordinary pots, bottles, tires, boxes, and PVC pipes – in general, anything that can serve as a frame or container for soil.
What types are there?
The designs are arches, columns, towers and pyramids, which determine the size of the flower beds. If the flowerpots decrease from the bottom up, the flower bed has a pyramidal shape, and if the containers are the same size – colonial. Flower beds in the form of cascades, reminiscent of fountains, look especially luxurious.
Each plant is on its own tier and has its own lump of earth, so flowers can be combined without fear of an unfavorable neighborhood. Due to the small area of u200bu200bopen land, there are almost no weeds in the flower beds, and water does not flow beyond the flowerpots, so flower care is reduced to a minimum.
On a wall or fence
The easiest and most effective way to decorate a fence or an empty wall is to use containers for decorative landscaping. They will help organize the space and make a boring plane more voluminous. Instead of plastic containers, you can use wooden boxes or pipes, fixed one above the other, randomly or in a checkerboard pattern.

Flower screen
The design is a frame with a base made of wood or metal. The screen perfectly zones the space and can be installed in any suitable place on the site – for example, to separate the patio. The degree of its transparency depends on the number of plants planted and their ability to grow into a solid wall.

In the form of a pillar
A flower pillar or tower can be an independent decoration framing a path or an entrance to a house, or an addition to an above-ground flowerbed. A cylinder with holes in which hanging plants are planted is most often used as a support.

What plants can be planted?
In vertical flowerbeds, flowering annuals reveal the beauty of their climbing form to the maximum: petunia, lobelia, nasturtium, violets, balsam, sutera. Green deciduous plants are also suitable, the tiered placement of which will perfectly emphasize their shape: chlorophytum, fern, daylily.

Bushy plantings are also suitable: lush begonias, deadnettle, coleus, alyssum. Avoid plants with an extensive root system.
Experienced gardeners use vertical flower beds to plant strawberries, basil, rosemary and mint. They don’t need a lot of soil to grow, but you need to carefully monitor the humidity. Before the strawberries bloom, it is necessary to apply complex fertilizers.
How to do it yourself?
There are several ways to create a homemade vertical flowerbed. Let’s look at the simplest and most interesting master classes.
From a grid
Before creating a flower bed from a bucket and a grid, we recommend that you determine a permanent place for it: it will be difficult to move a ready-made heavy structure.
Tools and materials
For manufacturing you will need:
- Metal grid.
- A bucket or durable pot.
- Plastic pipe.
- Film.
- Stones.
- Wire.
It is better to plant flowers after 1–2 days, so that the soil has time to compact. Water for irrigation is poured into a pipe with holes, moistening the soil. Detailed instructions for creating a vertical flower bed from a grid are in this video:
From pots
Any containers in which holes can be made are suitable for creating this picturesque tower.
Tools and materials
To make a bright vertical flowerbed of pots, you will need:
- Five clay pots.
- Steel pipe.
- Drill
- Soil.
- Flowers.
- Paints and brushes optional.
Step-by-step instructions
- Choose a place for the terracotta tower: once assembled, it cannot be moved. Drive a metal rod into the ground – deep enough so that the structure is stable and the pots fit. We put the largest container on it.
- Fill it with soil so that the second pot, put on the pipe, does not fall through.
- Fill it with soil and thus create a tower, repeating the steps taken. If necessary, widen the hole in the bottom.
- Plant flowering plants. If desired, you can decorate the tower to your taste – for example, paint it with acrylic paint or alkyd enamel.
From plastic bottles
You can decorate a wall or fence with flowerpots cut out of plastic bottles. You can also build a special screen for them, zoning the area. The containers should be cut into two parts to get two flowerpots, or make a hole on one of the sides. Over time, the flowers will grow and cover the unsightly vases.
Tools and materials
For work you will need:
- Bottles
- Awl and screwdriver to create holes.
- Clerical knife.
- Scissors.
- Wooden strip and screws for fixation.
- Soil.
- Plants.
One of the options for creating a hanging vertical flower bed from plastic bottles is presented in this video:
From pallets
To decorate your garden or vegetable garden with a flower bed from a wooden pallet, you need to find a solid structure without broken boards. The pots can be installed inside, fixed on the outside, or you can do without special containers.
Tools and materials
For work you will need:
- Pallet.
- Sandpaper.
- Geotextile.
- Furniture stapler.
- Stain, varnish or paint, brushes.
- Primer.
- Flowers.
Step-by-step instructions
- Sand the pallet with sandpaper to remove all irregularities. For convenience, you can use a grinder. Cover the wood with a protective compound – this way the flowerbed will last much longer.
- Fold the geotextile in two layers. Securely beat the structure with a stapler.
- Lay the pallet horizontally, fill it with soil and plant the flowers close to each other. The flowerbed should be kept in this position for a week: the soil will be compacted, and the plants will take root and gain a foothold.
- We turn the structure over, lean it against a support or secure it to a solid foundation – a wall, fence or gazebo. You can grow seedlings and healthy greens for the table in the pallets.
From boxes
This vertical flower bed takes up little space, and is also complemented by an original mobile platform that allows you to move the structure. But even without wheels, such a composition looks unusual, acting as an accent detail of landscape design.
Tools and materials
For work you will need:
- Five processed and stained boxes.
- A plate for a mobile base.
- Two slats.
- Burlap or geotextile.
- Four furniture wheels.
- Soil.
- Seedlings.
- Nails and a hammer (or a screwdriver with screws).
- Saw.
- Glue gun or stapler.
- Glue for wood.
Step-by-step instructions
- Screw the wheels to the wooden platform.
- Design the future vertical flower bed by stacking boxes on top of each other. The structure should be stable.
- Seal the gaps between the slats with burlap or geotextile so that the soil remains in place.
- Secure the assembly with slats for stabilization. We use screws and wood glue.
- Fill the boxes with old leaves, branches and soil.
- Plant flowers, provide proper watering and enjoy the result. The configuration and location of the vertical flower bed made of boxes can be any.
Design ideas
To create an unusual flower bed, gardeners use old buckets, watering cans, barrels and even stepladders. Wide PVC pipes are often used as an idea for creating a vertical flower bed – small holes are made in them for seedlings (or cut in half) and hung on a support.
