Features of Dark Interior Design
Before you start decorating a dark bedroom, read the advice of designers:
- Think carefully about lighting. Dark shades absorb light, so you will need a larger source and it should be brighter than in a light room.
- Consider the effect on size. Any bedroom will become smaller – keep this in mind when creating the interior of a small bedroom.
- Use mixed colors. Pure shades are too clear and aggressive, while muted ones, on the contrary, promote relaxation.
- Arrange the gradient correctly. In a bedroom with dark walls, the ceiling should be lighter than them, and the floor – darker.
- Drape a sunny window. Firstly, ultraviolet light contributes to the fading of colors, and secondly, there should be no bright light in the bedroom.
- Choose simplicity and monotony. The dark range is active in itself, there is no need to enhance it with patterns and designs.
- Buy contrasting furniture. A win-win option for a dark bedroom design is light furniture for black walls and vice versa.
What colors can be used?
When it comes to dark tones, many people automatically imagine black. Of course, this is one way to create an intimate space. For a bedroom in light dark tones, a combination of black with white, gray or beige is possible. Accessories, textiles or furniture can be made in this range.
But black is not the only option:
Blue. Blue-black, azure, sapphire, ultramarine – the colors of the sea or the night sky. In combination with white, they create a spectacular contrasting tandem, with light blue – a natural, calming bedroom design in dark tones.
Green. When choosing a shade for the walls, remember the beautiful natural stones: malachite, emerald, jade. Greenish range of any brightness relaxes, so it is ideal for the bedroom. Warm light colors will serve as a wonderful addition to the chosen tone.
Red. Burgundy is not the only one in the rich range of scarlet tones. Burgundy, garnet, ruby, port wine, sangria are the choice for the brave. But it is thanks to the red palette that the interior will look stylish and expensive. For the most dramatic effect, add dark green, brown, and black accents.

Brown. Delicious shades of coffee or chocolate are the best base for northern rooms. They warm and relax. To maintain a warm range, add peach, honey or mustard.
Gray. The reverse side of warm brown is cold charcoal, anthracite, granite, marengo. Feel free to paint southern bedrooms in dark colors in any of the shades – the cold range will balance the bright sun. Combines with any pastel and muted colors: blue, pink, lilac, yellow.
Don’t be afraid to paint not only the walls, but also the ceiling. A dark bedroom will not become visually lower if the decor includes white molding or light lamps. And in the case of a deep shade of the floor, ceiling and furniture, but light walls – the space will generally expand.
How to dilute dark tones?
We have already touched on the topic of additional accents for a bedroom in dark tones, now we will dwell on this important point in more detail.
Light. Even a large monochrome room will seem like an uncomfortable cave, but light spots will prevent this from happening. The simplest idea is to use light textiles – bedding, curtains, headboard upholstery.
Bright. The black background is a canvas on which any color will burn. Pure contrasting light green, turquoise, crimson actively attract attention to themselves, so you can’t overdo it with them.
Deep. For a bedroom interior in a modern style, you will need primarily dusty, powdery and dirty shades. Choose any colors, depending on your preferences.

Warm. To prevent a dark grey, blue or green bedroom from being too cold, add yellow, orange and red. The classic duets are blue-orange, green-red, purple-yellow.
Cold. The same goes for overly warm bedrooms — add some coolness to them.
What furniture is suitable?
Furnishing a bedroom always starts with the bed — not only the style, but also the color of the future furniture depends on it. The bed can be:
- Metal. This will look appropriate in oriental or vintage interiors. Black will “dissolve” in the overall color of the room, and white or colored, on the contrary, will become the main accent.
- Wooden. Depending on the shade of the surface, it will suit both a loft and a classic. Wenge, mahogany, walnut or cherry will make the bedroom even rougher. With light ash, oak, beech, alder, the interior will become airier and lighter.
- Soft. Fully upholstered beds are especially popular in a modern style – choose the color of the upholstery at your discretion.

The rest of the furniture can be either in the same tone as the bed or in contrast to it. The shade of the walls is also important:
- White furniture looks spectacular against a black, gray, brown, blue background. It creates a feeling of airiness.
- Warm-colored cabinets will make the interior cozier and more pleasant.
- Black furniture is impractical – replace it with something less contrasting. If the wood is wenge, laminated chipboard or laminated – gray, blue.
To make the furniture absorb less light, order models with glossy facades – with their reflective ability, a dark bedroom will look more spacious.
Glass and mirrors have the same effect: mirrored wardrobe doors are a salvation for a dark-colored bedroom.

Thinking about lighting
Remember the main rule: there should be a lot of lamps in the bedroom and they should be bright. This means that the central ceiling chandelier should be supplemented with spotlights above the bed, on the desk or vanity table, and the closet should be illuminated separately.
If there is a textured wall in the bedroom, make it illuminated. Dim light is used as a night light or turned on when getting ready for bed.
White, silver, gold or glass lamps can serve as decor – they will catch the eye. Consider this when buying lamps.

What curtains and accessories will suit?
Dark furniture and wallpaper stand out on their own, so there shouldn’t be too many additional decorations. Hang one or more paintings above the bed, place figurines or books on the nightstands, and lay a cozy blanket or bedspread on top of the bed linen.
As for curtains, their presence and appearance depend on the location of the room. In a bedroom with southern windows, thick blackout curtains are a must so that bright rays do not interfere with sleep in the morning. In northern and western rooms, you can get by with light curtains or do without them altogether.
