22 sq. m. apartment layouts.

Studios can be rectangular or square. Each layout type has its own characteristics. A rectangular studio looks narrow, but is convenient because the kitchen and sleeping area can be easily separated from each other. A square layout looks more spacious, but in this case it is more difficult to zone the kitchen.

How to arrange 22 square meters?

Organizing a comfortable space for living is, first of all, drawing up a clear design project at the stage of planning the renovation. A small area will easily fit a kitchen set, a table and furniture for sleeping. In the remaining squares, you need to try to compactly distribute the space for storage and work, organize zoning with a partition, a rack or a bar counter.

  • Arrangement of furniture and household appliances. When arranging a studio, as in any small-family apartment, you need to use every centimeter. The kitchen set is usually located along the wall dividing a small bathroom, and does not have much space for cooking. The problem can be solved with a bar counter, which will become an “island”, a dining table and a work surface. It is recommended to hang the TV on the wall – this will free up space that can be used for a computer.
  • Lighting. The more light, the more spacious the room seems. Even if there are few lamps, the amount of light can be doubled by using mirrors and glossy surfaces. Built-in lighting gives a visual effect of lightness of the set.
  • Color scheme. What color scheme to use for the interior is a matter of taste for the apartment owner, but it is worth remembering some nuances. Dark colors absorb light: a studio with such a finish looks much more cramped. You should not split the space with multi-colored decor: you need to use 3 main shades, one of which can be an accent.
  • Textiles. Inserts of patterns and ornaments (for example, pillows) will decorate a small room, but only if the rest of the decor (bedspreads, curtains, carpets) remains monochromatic. It is not recommended to overload the furnishings with textures.

In order not to clutter the interior, you should use designs that take up space from floor to ceiling: more things will fit, and the closed inter-ceiling space will look more aesthetically pleasing.

Designers also use some tricks to make the furnishings look lighter: transparent plastic or glass furniture (chairs, tabletops, shelves), facades without fittings, doorways without frames. Large household appliances, cabinets or a work desk are hidden in niches: any free space carries a functional load.

To save space in a 22 sq. m. apartment, the sleeping area can be arranged upstairs: a loft bed on stands, a hanging bed or a podium, inside which personal belongings can easily fit, will do.

Working and children’s areas for such an area are not an easy task, but doable. Bunk beds and transforming furniture will help a family living in a studio. If the apartment has a balcony, it must be attached to the living space or insulated and equipped as a separate room or study.

If the residents like to receive guests, the studio should be zoned: it is not customary to meet friends in the bedroom, so the bed should fold up, turning the room into a living room.

In studios, the bathroom is usually combined with the toilet, so it looks relatively spacious. Ideally, there is space in the bathroom for a washing machine and it does not need to be taken out to the kitchen. It is better to store household products in hanging mirrored cabinets, and reduce the number of open shelves as much as possible.

The hallway in a 22 sq. m. studio apartment is small, so the best solution for storing outerwear is closed cabinets. If there is an empty corner, it is advisable to buy a corner cabinet: it is much more ergonomic than a straight one.

Photos of 22 m2 studios in various styles

Most studio apartments are decorated in a modern style. This trend allows for the use of bright colors, multifunctional structures, and spot lighting. Even panels or drawings on the walls are appropriate: a properly selected image distracts from the modest size of the apartment.

Increasingly, studio owners are paying attention to the Scandinavian style, which came to us from Finland, where residents experience a lack of light and free space. They decorate their small, bright apartments with houseplants, cozy textiles, not forgetting about saving space: here you can see products on thin legs, hanging structures, and the absence of unnecessary things.

The Scandinavian style is a more “homey” version of minimalism, which in turn represents the ideal of an ascetic lifestyle. The furniture here is laconic, and the decor is considered excess. Roller blinds are used to decorate the windows.

The small area of a studio apartment of 21-22 sq. m. is not a reason to refuse a designer interior. An interesting solution would be a loft: it values not only brick and exposed metal pipes, but also space, so the roughness of the finish is balanced by glossy surfaces, mirrors and light, flowing fabrics on the windows.

Lovers of natural materials can decorate a studio in an eco-style, adding wooden textures (natural furniture, laminate “under the tree”), and connoisseurs of French comfort can arrange an apartment in the Provence style, with floral patterns and antique furniture.

Even a luxurious classic style can be appropriate in a studio: among expensive materials, figured furniture and decorations, it is easy to forget about the modest size of the apartment.
