What materials can you make them from?

You can find decorative butterflies for walls in many stores – already cut out, equipped with fasteners, completely ready to stick. Three-dimensional ones are made of plastic, paper, wood.

Don’t want a three-dimensional decoration? Look for flat stickers made of vinyl film. A non-standard option for fluttering insects is plastic with a mirror coating.

Homemade butterflies are made mainly from offset or colored paper. Using a stencil and scissors, it is easy to make many single-color or multi-colored figures. Bright paper butterflies have one significant drawback – they are short-lived, afraid of water, and easily torn.

To cover most of the shortcomings, it is enough to replace the paper with thin but durable cardboard.

Paper butterflies can not only be cut out, but also folded. How to make origami butterflies correctly, look below in the section “How to make them yourself”.

Advice! Fans of boho, retro, Provence can decorate the wall with butterflies made from the pages of old books.

Volumetric butterflies on the wall can be made from any available materials:

  • polymer clay,
  • foamiran,
  • self-hardening porcelain,
  • vinyl records,
  • old disks,
  • fabric.

Choose a material that you know how and like to work with.

How to arrange them beautifully?

Before you start decorating the walls with butterflies, decide on the color, size, and quantity of interior decor:

  1. The shade of the butterflies in the interior should contrast with the color of the walls. Colored figures are suitable for monochromatic surfaces, black ones will fit into a light monochrome design, and white ones should be chosen for a room in bright colors.
  2. Decorative interior items should match the style. Laconic black or white ones for high-tech, carved gold ones for classics.
  3. A panel of butterflies on the wall should be proportionate. The smaller the room, the smaller the applique and the insects with wings are made.

You can arrange the butterflies on the wall in different ways, but chaotic gluing is unlikely to look interesting. Therefore, choose one of 4 figures:

  • Expanding line. Many butterflies seem to fly away from one point. In this case, you can use figures of the same size everywhere or increase them as the strip expands. The line is first drawn with a pencil on the wall – straight or curved. The beginning is left as is, or decorated with a container from which the fluttering beetles will fly out: a mug, a clock, a basket, a vase.
  • Circle. The symbolic circle in the center is left empty, beautiful winged butterflies are attached around it. The composition will fit perfectly on the wall above the sofa, bed, fireplace, table.

  • Whirlwind. Wall decoration with butterflies is done in a spiral – the line is narrower in the center, wider on the outside.
  • Figure. Elements are often arranged in a certain pattern: a large heart can be created from small figures.

How can you attach them to the wall?

Making butterflies is only 50% of the success, the resulting figures need to be attached to the wall. A suitable method is chosen depending on the wall covering and the desired durability of the decor:

  • Double-sided tape. A reliable option is to simply cut out a square of the required size, stick it onto the butterfly, remove the protective layer, and press it to the wall. The downside of scotch tape is that it will be almost impossible to remove it from the wall. Therefore, this method is only suitable for an “eternal” butterfly painting on the wall, which will be removed along with the wallpaper. Or look for adhesive tape in stores marked “easily removed from the wall.”

  • Glue. PVA or Moment is used either for “eternal” compositions or for gluing to the base separating the wall from insects. In other cases, use an adhesive mass like Blu Tack – it is suitable for any surface, is easily removed, and can be reused.
  • Tailor’s pin, drawing pin. In some cases, decorative heads of buttons or pins will serve as an additional decoration – for example, imitating the head or eyes of an insect. Pins are best suited for cork or wooden bases, but it is also possible to insert them into wallpaper.
  • The composition does not necessarily have to be attached to the wall. To make it look airy, hang it on a chandelier or curtain rod using a thread or fishing line.

How to make your own by hand: 4 microns

You can buy butterflies for decoration in the store, but you can make them yourself. Especially if you have some free time and little helpers.

From paper

You will need thick paper or flexible cardboard (glossy, matte), a pencil, scissors.

1. First of all, decide on a template – you can draw it yourself, take one of the ones suggested below, or find a suitable one on the Internet.

Important! Avoid too small details – they are not easy to cut out.

2. Prepare one or several stencils in different sizes. Place them on clean sheets, trace along the contour.

3. All you have to do is cut out the drawings, make a crease (mark the fold line), and attach them to the wall.

Origami

If the idea of u200bu200blength cutting confuses you, fold it! For origami, take paper, cut squares of any size and get to work, following the detailed diagram.

From polymer clay

Take the clay itself, a baking mold of the desired silhouette, any suitable thread.

1. Roll out the layer, 4-5 mm thick, cut out the figures, make 4 holes in the center (like on a button). To bake, place the blanks on something voluminous, giving the wings the desired shape in advance.

2. After cooling, insert a thread into the holes, tie a knot on the inside – attach it to a pin or sticky mass.

From fabric

For work, you can take felt, which already holds its shape well, or ordinary fabric (cotton, linen, gabardine). In the first case, it is enough to simply cut it out. In the second, you can go two ways:

  1. Fold origami from fabric, secure with stitches.
  2. Cut out butterflies, put them on a voluminous base, coat with PVA. Work like papier-mâché. When the blanks are dry, the bugs will hold their wings perfectly.

How do they look in the interior of rooms?

Most often, butterflies can be seen on the wall of a child’s room – this is a great option for a girl’s room. A realistic effect is achieved through volumetric products, and an artistic effect is achieved through stickers or drawings.

The color scheme ranges from bright to monochromatic, pastel. Depending on the child’s hobbies, you can make decor from book pages, music records.

Butterflies are also used in the living room: they are used to decorate an empty wall above or opposite the sofa. It is ideal to complement the three-dimensional figures with LED lighting: the light helps to create a dramatic atmosphere.

In an adult bedroom, the composition is used to decorate the wall above the bed: but if the girl likes this option, it is better to discuss this issue with the man living in the room in advance.

In the kitchen, butterflies highlight the dining area: a whirlwind of wings above the table in combination with a chandelier or sconce will look original. To create a sense of filling the space, plant several specimens on cabinet doors, lamps, and the refrigerator.

A swarm of butterflies at the entrance to the house looks original – the decorations on the walls literally indicate the directions to different rooms. It feels like they just flew in from the street and spread throughout the apartment.

Original design ideas

Butterflies are good on their own, but to get a more interesting result, use ready-made ideas:

  • Frame them. You will need a few cut-out butterflies of different shapes and several frames: such an entomological collection looks no worse than the real thing, but not a single insect will be harmed.
  • Add meaning to the composition. For example, by placing a cat below that hunts for winged insects.
  • Make an unusual figure. Create a large butterfly that breaks up into smaller ones. Or leave an empty heart, densely planting paper wings around it.
  • Play with color. Create a gradient from bright to white or make smooth transitions between shades – from blue to green, yellow, orange, red.
  • Add flowers. In nature, butterflies are most often surrounded by flowering plants: why not take advantage of this idea of real harmony? Flowers are glued to a vertical surface mixed with butterflies or a vase with them is installed in the base.
