Decorate with stickers
The easiest way to update your refrigerator is with vinyl stickers. You can buy them both in hardware stores and online. There are two types:
- Stickers that are applied to a small area. They are cheaper and cannot completely transform the unit. But their design can be changed according to your mood.
- Self-adhesive film: it is used to decorate the facade and side walls. High-quality film is not afraid of moisture, heat-resistant, does not lose its properties under the influence of direct sunlight, but requires accuracy when applying.
You can do the decor yourself, using only self-adhesive furniture film, a pencil and scissors. As a result, you can get a stylish kitchen element, decorated with geometric patterns, figures or silhouettes.

Paint
To completely transform your refrigerator, you can change its color using metal paint or a durable chalk composition. A bright coating will make it more noticeable, turning it into the main accent of the interior.

It is easiest to paint the “guinea pig” with an aerosol can, but alkyd enamels will also work. Before painting, it is necessary to lightly sand the surface and degrease it with alcohol, then cover the fittings with masking tape. You should also protect the furniture and walls with a film from drops and splashes.

To improve adhesion, it is worth using a primer designed for metal surfaces. If desired, the painted electrical appliance can be varnished.
To add variety to the design, use stencils, masking tape or unusual color combinations.
Turn into a “chalkboard”
For those who are not afraid of experiments, black (or colored) chalkboard paint is suitable. The design of such a refrigerator can be changed at will, drawing patterns, images and leaving notes.

The coating is durable, but, like any paint, it excludes the return of the refrigerator to its previous state. This design is suitable for a loft or Scandi kitchen, but is not suitable for classic styles.
Decorate with houseplants
If the top of the refrigerator is empty (or there are things on it that there was no other place for), it is worth using the space more rationally. Fresh flowers, as well as botanical copies, will fit perfectly into a modern interior and soften the strict lines of a bulky electrical appliance.
The shoots of climbing plants, beautifully falling from above, look especially good.

Another interesting idea is to place pots with edible greenery directly on the side of the refrigerator, but for this you will need powerful magnets. And for an original decoration in a botanical style, wine corks with holes filled with soil and acting as a planter for unpretentious succulents are suitable. They are also attached with magnets.
Disguise as a cabinet
If the kitchen is designed in the Provence, shabby chic or country style, it is difficult to fit an electrical appliance into the rustic setting. But with plywood pieces, slats and liquid nails at hand, it is easy to stylize metal facades as wooden doors, thereby giving the refrigerator a more suitable look.
The elements are fixed with clamps, and after the adhesive has dried, the surface is covered with paint in the color of the furniture.
Paint
You can turn the unit into an art object with the help of professionals or yourself – it all depends on your imagination and artistic skills.

Acrylic paints, enamel, airbrushes and art markers are suitable for painting. To protect the work, you will need a spray varnish – this way the surface will last much longer. But car varnishes have a strong smell, so acrylic composition is better suited for home use.
The design should be selected to match the style of the interior, and also take into account its color scheme.
Organize an exhibition
Anything will do to create a home gallery: postcards, photos, travel tickets and printouts of your favorite images. If you approach the matter with taste, they will create an interesting living composition. To arrange the exhibition as neatly as possible, it is worth ordering special photo magnets.
Look at examples of wall decor in the kitchen.

You can also decorate the refrigerator using the “decoupage” technique, using napkins, cutouts from books, magazines or comics. After pasting, the surface is protected with varnish.
Another DIY decor idea: secure wooden clothespins with liquid nails. Hang stylish postcards, children’s drawings or printed images. You can change the decorations daily.
Use the space around
If there is free space above the refrigerator, it is worth using it ergonomically – especially in a small room. When ordering a new kitchen set, this issue is thought out in advance, but what to do in an already finished kitchen?
The first option is to install hanging shelves and fill them with beautiful dishes, baskets or cookbooks.
The second option is to design a cabinet for the refrigerator with your own hands or order it from a professional. The idea is suitable even for a regular electrical appliance: the main thing is to leave enough space for ventilation.
Such a cabinet is a “superstructure” standing on the sides, fastened with a stiffening rib. The space above and on the sides of the structure can be used for kitchen utensils.
Unusual examples
This approach will be appreciated by the most creative individuals: after decorating the refrigerator with moldings, carved elements, paints and a special paste that adds volume, the product becomes unrecognizable. Before you start working, choose a style that suits the interior:
- for a feminine and delicate kitchen, carved moldings, powdery shades, and floral patterns are appropriate;
- for a brutal setting, “steampunk” with decor in the form of rivets, gears, and rust is suitable.

Add useful details
The refrigerator can become even more ergonomic if you use its sides and facades to store small items. You can easily find a variety of pockets with magnets and shelves with reliable fasteners on sale. It is appropriate to place a notepad, calendar or planner on the door.

Metal shelves are easy to find in online stores, and wooden structures can be made by hand. This is especially important for owners of small kitchens, where every centimeter counts.
To change the look of the kitchen, sometimes it is enough to work on the design of the old refrigerator, making it more original, bright and ergonomic.
