Types of door trims
The general appearance of the strips is usually rectangular, but the shape can be different depending on the type of cut:
- Flat (straight). The surface is smooth, has the shape of a rectangle at the end. They are installed at right angles to each other (in the photo below).
- Figured. They are distinguished by the presence of a certain relief (in the form of rollers) on the surface. The vertical pattern gives the doorway an original look.
- Radius (semicircular). The surface is convex. Depending on the design solution, it can be symmetrical in the form of a crescent or slightly shifted to one side of the strip, resembling a falling drop.
Options for using casings
When choosing, consider the location of the doors in the room:
- Any materials can be used for interior doors.
- For the entrance door inside the apartment – metal or plastic, which are highly resistant to mechanical stress.

Material of door frames
Thanks to the variety of materials, you can decorate the opening in any room, it is only important to consider the features of each of them:
- Plastic. PVC is used for production. Most often used on doors made of the same material. PVC is not afraid of moisture, prevents mold and is often equipped with cable channels. Large selection of colors.
- Wooden. They are made of glued solid wood (common furniture materials are smooth eco-veneer, veneer), do not deform over time. Easily match the tone and texture of wooden doors, are varied in patterns and textures, and are environmentally friendly. Baguette door frames are made of natural wood – birch, oak. The only downside is that they are sensitive to moisture and afraid of temperature changes.
- MDF. The most common companion to MDF doors – lightweight and easy to install. They accurately repeat the shade and texture of the canvas.
- Gypsum. They are used as an addition to the existing gypsum decor in the room – stucco for the ceiling or walls. Painted gypsum requires careful use, as it easily crumbles when hit.
- Metallic. They are used for decorating both entrance doors and interior glass doors in high-tech style interiors.

Regardless of the material, door frames are installed strictly perpendicular to the floor.
In the photo, the metal frame perfectly complements the glass doors in the hallway.
Color range of door frames
Traditionally, the color is selected to match the color of the door and the overall color scheme. But you can always stick to basic colors:
- White.
- Wenge.
- Black.
- Brown.
- Gray.
In the photo, the door and door frames are made in the same color scheme.
As a modern solution – a contrasting color of the door and gray, dark or light shade of the planks – this combination looks original and stylish (example in the photo).
Design and shapes of decorative door frames
It is quite easy to make an accent in the interior if you choose the right shape:
Narrow
They are chosen in cases where the door is very narrow and elongated, when the corner of the room and the adjacent walls are located close (as in the photo), in cases where there is a niche above the door. They are often purchased to save money and decorate utility rooms.
Carved
Decorated with carved patterns on natural wood.
Wide
Create a special tone in the interior and, unlike other types, do not necessarily match the color of the door; the combination with the baseboards is much more important. Ideal for panel doors.
Semi-circular
Frame semi-circular openings, arches. The sizes are individual, most often they are attached using telescopic fasteners.
With patterns
A beautiful decorative effect obtained by using patina even on a simple material. This technique emphasizes and enhances a classic interior. They are used in such styles as Provence, Baroque, Venetian.

Antique
Solid wood, with a texture that imitates aged wood. Suitable for country, loft, Provence styles.

Capitals
Additional polyurethane overlays on the upper part of the doorway – used to decorate door structures in a classic style (due to the overlay, the casing becomes double). They perform an exclusively aesthetic function.
Variants for decorating door frames in room interiors
Depend on the room in which the doors are installed. The reason for this is the different interior design, as well as the peculiarity of the climate inside the room.
- Hallway. This is where the entrance door to the apartment is most often located. The door frames, the door jamb to the floor and the threshold are made of metal, natural wood or thick plastic.
- Bathroom. The bathroom is a place of high humidity. Taking this feature into account, you need to choose ceramic or plastic materials.
- Toilet. As a rule, the bathroom is a small space in which narrow door frames made of ordinary plastic, wood or ceramics can act as a corner plinth.
- Kitchen. You can use different materials.

There are no restrictions on the choice of material for decorating the doorway to the kitchen. Everything depends on the design project and the taste of the owner.
Photos in different interior styles
Different stylistic techniques easily coexist in the design of modern interiors. So, in the design of an apartment in the minimalist style, it is not at all necessary to precisely match the colors of the door leaf and door frames (photo on the right). And in the Provence or country style, classic beige door frames will perfectly complement the interior with a door in light colors.
