Features of wall decoration in the English style
The most common finishing material for walls in the English style is wallpaper. There is also a combined design solution – dividing the wall into two parts by height. In this case, the lower part is decorated with natural wood panels, and the upper part is pasted over with wallpaper. This feature of wall decoration makes the “Victorian” style recognizable and a little prim.
Today, the following types of wallpaper for walls can be found on the finishing materials market:
- paper;
- non-woven;
- vinyl;
- textile.
Types of wallpaper
Each type has its own characteristic features.
Paper
Paper wallpaper has a number of advantages over other types. The material of the canvas is environmentally friendly with obvious air permeability, which in turn has a good effect on the microclimate of the room.
Non-woven
Non-woven wallpaper is characterized by wear resistance and durability. The canvas consists of two layers: the first is non-woven, and the second can be paper, textile or vinyl. It is the non-woven layer that is responsible for the durability of the coating, and the subsequent one is for the aesthetics!

Vinyl
Vinyl wallpaper, like non-woven wallpaper, consists of two layers – the top vinyl (or polyvinyl chloride), and the bottom (adjacent to the wall) – non-woven or paper. Due to the thickness of the canvas, the illusion of volume and depth is created in the room. Using this property, manufacturers combine the texture with various textures for wood, fabric, stone, rattan or decorative plaster, which makes the surface not inferior to natural materials.
Vinyl fabric is durable, resistant to moisture and mechanical damage. The coating is suitable for use in rooms where frequent wet cleaning is required.
Textile
Textile wallpaper in the English style came from the interiors of past centuries. However, they continue to be in demand today, because consist of environmentally friendly materials – linen, silk, viscose, cotton or felt. This type consists of two layers – the first (closer to the wall) is based on paper or non-woven fabric, and the second is decorative, determines the aesthetics of the space as a whole.

Wallpaper combinations
English-style wallpaper goes well with thick curtains, crystal chandeliers, a fireplace, antique interior items and, of course, leather furniture.
Furniture
Furniture made of mahogany, walnut and oak, decorated with carvings, is a good complement to wallpaper. Expensive fabrics, both plain and patterned, are used in the finishing of upholstered furniture. Velvet, velvet, flock, and leather are the most popular types for upholstery of sofas and armchairs. The shape of the furniture is also noteworthy, with its characteristic features – rounded armrests, Capitonné stitching, massive legs, and expensive drapery.

Curtains
Self-sufficient curtains made of brocade, thick silk, tapestry, velvet, and rep are also used in the drapery of the windows. It is worth noting that modern manufacturers of finishing materials have collections in which fabric and wallpaper have a common pattern. This allows you to combine wall decoration and drapery into a single decorative ensemble. Stripes, natural patterns, and checks are the most common patterns in curtains and good companions for wall coverings.
Traditional curtain shapes have a straight curtain silhouette with grabs, as well as a shortened one. The peculiarity of this type is the horizontal and lush fabric assembly, which covers a third of the window.
