Causes of creaking

To eliminate creaking of the bed, you need to understand why it appeared in the first place. There may be several sources:

  • Loose or broken fasteners. The bolts and nuts on which the bed frame is assembled tend to loosen – sometimes, to eliminate the creaking, it is enough to tighten them.
  • Problems with the orthopedic base. It consists of several elements, each of which can be the cause: slats, slat holders, frame.
  • Damaged mattress springs. Most often, this happens with models on a dependent spring block of poor quality – the parts rub against each other and make an unpleasant sound.
  • Friction at the joints. The places where the legs are attached to the side panels, the joints of the side panels and other joints can lead to the joint of the bed. The parts simply rub against each other.

Finding the source of the creaking

As you understood from the previous section, the creaking of the bed can come from any of its parts. Your task is to separate these parts from each other as much as possible, find the problem area and work with it.

  • First of all, remove the mattress, put it on the floor, walk on it. You must make sure that it is not the source of the noise.
  • Next, move on to the base of the bed. The creaking can be caused by support strips, fasteners, joints, the lifting mechanism (if any). Raise and lower the gas lift, listen to the sound. Press on all the joists one by one, check their fasteners, swing each corner and leg.
  • If nothing is creaking, move on to the frame. Shake the legs of the bed, corners and joints of the structure.

Elimination begins only after determining the most accurate source of the bed creaking.

Removing the creaking of a wooden bed

A wooden bed in the interior starts to creak more often than others. However, it is usually easier to deal with the creaking of a wooden model: it is enough to tighten all the fasteners. To do this:

  1. Remove the mattress, remove the base if possible.
  2. Use a ratchet, key or any other available method to tighten all the bolts in the corners, leg holders and other visible elements.
  3. Check if the bed creaks, if not, put it back together.

Advice: It is advisable to treat the fasteners – put a drop of machine oil on each bolt or go over the threads with paraffin. The nut will hold better and nothing will creak.

Suitable lubricants:

  • Paraffin. Candles are found in almost every home, so you do not have to spend money on special products. Paraffin or wax is used to rub both metal and wooden elements – it eliminates noise perfectly.
  • Silicone. It is sold in almost all hardware stores, it is inexpensive. It provides reliable protection against creaking.
  • WD-40. To use this deep penetration lubricant, it is not even necessary to disassemble the structure into individual parts. The only downside is that the lubricant dries quickly, so you will have to repeat the procedure more often.
  • Machine oil. An option when you need something cheap and cheerful. But do not use it on wooden parts, otherwise you risk getting ingrained greasy stains that are almost impossible to get rid of.

A wooden bed will not start rattling for no reason. The sounds appear as a result of long-term use. But if the bed is not even six months old, check the floor level. Perhaps the cause of the creaking bed is an uneven base and it will need to be moved.

A double wooden bed with a heavy headboard can also be a source of noise. The headboard becomes loose, large gaps form and it begins to creak unpleasantly. In this case, tightening the bolts is not enough:

  1. Remove the wooden bed from the mattress and base.
  2. Unscrew the headboard.
  3. Smear the joints with rubber glue.
  4. Put felt, silicone or other material spacers into the resulting gaps.
  5. Reassemble the structure, not forgetting the silicone grease for fasteners.

Preventing creaking is always easier than getting rid of it:

  • When buying, pay attention to the quality of the wood or chipboard, there should not be any waves, bulges or damage must;
  • give preference to a mattress on an independent spring block – it is protected from sounds. comfortable, durable;
  • install the bed on a level place – check the covering with a level, all legs should stand firmly on the floor;
  • lean a high headboard on the wall, so it will have less chance of loosening;
  • tighten the bolts every 3-6 months (if possible, strengthen them with washers), lubricate the elements.

Getting rid of the creaking of a bed with a lifting mechanism

The more contacting parts in the furniture, the more likely it is to hear a creak. Therefore, when purchasing a model with a lift, do not be surprised why the bed creaks. However, with proper care and attention, your bed will last a long time without any extraneous sounds.

If the bed is already creaking, listen and find the cause:

  • slats or base boards;
  • slat holders;
  • frame;
  • lifting mechanism parts.

First, let’s deal with the base itself: the creaking of the bed is caused by friction at the joints, damaged slats and their locks.

  1. Remove the mattress.
  2. Press and rock the base from different angles to determine the source.
  3. Check all the slats and their holders – they should hold firmly in the grooves.
  4. Wiggle the legs.

How to get rid of a creaking bed if the slat holder is broken? As with the breakage of the slat itself, only a replacement will help – parts are sold in many furniture stores. The repair process depends on the type of your tip and its fastening, usually it is enough to unscrew a couple of screws and screw them back.

The base creaks, but the slats and tips are intact? Disassemble them, lubricate the fasteners, add a thin gasket between the slat and the holder.

If the source is the lifting mechanism itself, there is no point in repairing it – only replacing it.

  1. Remove the mattress, lift the base.
  2. Unscrew the gas lift from the base and frame.
  3. Purchase the same model in the store.
  4. Install it in place.

Eliminating the creaking of a metal bed

Does your metal bed squeak? There are two main reasons: the fasteners have come loose or the parts are rubbing against each other.

What to do to stop the bed from squeaking:

  1. Remove the mattress and base, make sure that the creaking is coming from the frame itself.
  2. Lubricate all bolts and joints.
  3. Tighten each nut properly.

It happens that debris gets into the joint – one tiny grain of sand can cause the structure to start squeaking loudly. Try vacuuming the area or disassembling and wiping with a damp cloth to remove dirt.

Preventing extraneous sounds:

  • Periodically (once every 3-6 months) tighten the screws; if defects appear, they should be replaced with new ones.
  • Lubricate the parts with the same frequency.
  • The headboard is an area of increased stress. To prevent noise here, it is enough to put a rubber or silicone gasket in the corners.
  • Carry out wet cleaning every time you change the bed linen.

A squeaky bed does not require replacement, but repair. Getting rid of the noise is easy – spend a little time finding the cause and eliminate it.
