By type of balcony
By appearance, there are open, closed and insulated balconies. Only in the latter can plants exist all year round, the other options are more suitable for seasonal floriculture. Let’s take a closer look at the selection of flowers for each type.
Open
Petunia
Various bright petunias bloom all summer, so they are often used to decorate city street flower beds: but they are also quite suitable for decorating balconies. Most often, they are grown in balcony boxes on the outside of the fence, ampelous varieties can be hung in pots on the wall or ceiling.
If you are going to grow petunias from seeds, you should start planting around February-March: flowering begins only 70-80 days after sowing. While it is cold outside, seedlings are kept indoors, but they are necessarily hardened: for example, the windows are often opened. As soon as the temperature stabilizes, transfer to the balcony.
Important! Petunia does not like too much sun, dry soil and stagnant water.
Purslane
Another colorful option that can decorate not only the garden, but also the apartment. Purslane is one of the most unpretentious flowers for the balcony: it is not afraid of direct sunlight, winds, can be planted in the spring directly in the final container.
It begins to bloom about 60 days after sowing the seeds, the flowers are small, multi-colored: yellow, pink, red, purple.
Advice! After flowering, collect the seed pods – then next year you will not have to spend money on buying seeds again.
Marigolds
The third option, suitable for decorating a balcony – sunny marigolds! They can often be found in urban compositions or in flower beds in summer cottages, but can also be grown in pots. To do this, take a container 20-30 cm deep and plant the flowers at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other.
Important! Marigolds will feel great on a southern balcony, because love the sun.
Calendula
The fourth flower for an open balcony is a blooming calendula. The juicy combination of apricot buds with green leaves looks very summery, and even a novice gardener can provide the minimum requirements for full flowering.
Advice! Regularly cut off faded buds to stimulate the formation of new ones.
Daisies
Terry luxurious daisies are considered perennials: if you are going to grow them on the balcony, keep in mind that they will bloom late in the first year or may not bloom at all.
To admire the buds already in the first summer, buy seedlings, and do not grow from seeds.
Glazed
Nasturtium
Even if you plant only them, variety is guaranteed: flowers can be ampelous, climbing and bushy. The first ones are hung from the ceiling, the second ones are used for vertical gardening, the last ones are planted in balcony boxes.
Important! To successfully grow nasturtium, the fragile flower is protected from strong winds and exposed to UV rays.
Lobelia
If you want an abundance of small blue, blue, purple flowers on the balcony, choose a lush bush named after the botanist L’Obel. The annual looks great in hanging pots and hanging containers outdoors or indoors.
Advice! Care is simple, but lobelia requires high humidity and protection from direct sunlight.
Viola
Another way to add cool shades. Although purple pansies are considered the most popular, viola can be yellow, burgundy, and white. Violet is one of the most capricious plants for a balcony: you should only have it if you are ready to water the soil every day (and more than once in the heat!).
Sweet pea
A beautiful morning glory with small, multi-colored flowers of an unusual shape is a wonderful decoration option. Ideal for panoramic balconies with internal railings – the liana can curl along them and close the lower part of the loggia for viewing from the street.
It is not recommended to place the sweet pea under the scorching sun, water it too much or over-water it.
Verbena
If this flower is planted on the balcony, it will bloom from the end of May until frost, delighting with its bright clusters of small flowers. Externally, the buds are similar to pelargonium, but the leaves look completely different.
To grow in a closed balcony, you need to select the regularity of watering (in summer you will have to water 1-2 times a day), and the soil must be fertilized once every 7-10 days.
