Comparative table of texture characteristics

Today, when decorating apartments and houses, many people prefer stretch ceilings. And there is an explanation for this – they are distinguished by their excellent appearance, practicality and allow you to implement even the most intricate design solutions. But before installation, it is better to properly understand which texture is right for you.

There are three types of surfaces and they all have their own characteristics. First, let’s figure out the definitions of each type and then move on to the comparison.

  • Glossy ceilings are stretch fabrics with a smooth, “varnished” surface that has a mirror and reflective effect.
  • Matte ceilings are characterized by a rough texture and a complete absence of reflective effects. Therefore, such stretch ceilings do not reflect objects and look the same in any lighting.
  • Satin ceilings are an average option between the two previous ones. This is a smooth surface with a pearlescent sheen and low reflection effect. They change their appearance depending on natural and artificial lighting.

  • the exquisite structure of the satin coating is not similar to the rough graininess of the matte film;
  • the matte surface always looks the same, and the satin one changes its appearance depending on the type of lighting;
  • satin ceilings are more practical, since they are not afraid of temperature changes, matte ones are not recommended for use in rooms without heating;

What is the difference between satin and glossy surfaces?

When comparing satin and glossy surfaces, it is necessary to consider:

  • satin is easy to care for, it is more environmentally friendly and safer to use, while glossy surfaces require special cleaning methods and extremely careful handling;
  • the reflective properties of glossy surfaces are many times stronger than satin surfaces. The first ones look bright and flashy, the second ones are more restrained, classic, reflect the rays of light, but do not reflect;
  • the glossy surface is absolutely smooth, the satin texture resembles the fabric of the same name.

Recommendations for selection

Depending on the type of stretch fabric, all ceilings are considered environmentally friendly, safe and durable. Their technical characteristics are similar, so the choice is based on the features of the room and personal preferences.

  • For small rooms, it is better to choose glossy canvases, combining it with striped wallpaper. Such a composition will visually raise the ceilings and expand the space. For this purpose, designers use gloss in small hallways and bathrooms.
  • Also, glossy ceilings will ideally complement rooms where parties and dances are often held, and colored, unusual lighting is organized. They are often installed in the kitchen-living room.
  • A matte ceiling is the best option for a kitchen or living room. Its warmth will create coziness, and its chic classic look will harmonize with any stylistic design.
  • The matte surface is ideally combined with the classic style, including stucco and carved furniture.
  • For bedrooms and children’s rooms, I recommend purchasing satin canvases.

All satin, matte and glossy surfaces have their advantages and disadvantages. They can complement different stylistic solutions, and also be used both separately and in combination. It is worth choosing such materials based on the needs in a particular case, the technical characteristics of the room and your personal preferences.
