Types of Floating Bed Designs
Floating furniture hangs in the air thanks to specific fastening methods.
- On one leg. A floating bed can have only one support in the center of the base. Decorative lighting distracts attention from the leg, which is already almost invisible due to its location. Sometimes beams diverge from the central support, which allow the weight to be evenly distributed. With this type of fastening, the product can withstand a load of up to 300 kilograms.
- On magnets. The author of floating furniture on magnets is the Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars. The designer’s idea is based on the principle of magnetic levitation. Magnets are built into the frame of the product and into the floor, which hold it in the air. The floating bed remains in place thanks to four cables. The bed on magnets can withstand a weight of up to 600 kilograms. It is not suitable for people with pacemakers due to the magnetic field.
- On a metal frame. The main advantage of a metal frame is the reliability of the fasteners. The metal frame must be covered with powder paint against corrosion. Usually, the metal frame is covered with a body made of MDF, solid wood.
- Suspended from the ceiling. The bed can be attached to the ceiling with strong ropes. This design has increased safety requirements. For a child’s room, it is recommended to use steel cables instead of rope ropes.
- Attached to the wall. A headboard attached to the wall will add extra stability to the structure.

Pros and cons of using in the interior
Floating beds have a number of features that you need to know when choosing.
Shapes of floating beds
The choice of bed shape depends on a person’s personal ideas about comfort.
- Round. A round bed has a larger sleeping area compared to a rectangular one. A round hanging bed can be installed not only against the wall, but also in the corner of the room. In this case, an angular structure for fastening is formed behind the headboard.
- Rectangular. A rectangular bed is installed either with the headboard against the wall, or with both sides in the corner of the room. Rectangular shapes are universal for use in rooms of any size.

Ideas for beds with lighting
Base lighting serves to enhance the optical effect of hovering. LED lighting is located along the perimeter of the product, less often in the center of the base. With the help of the controller, you can change the intensity and color of the lighting.

The illuminated contour of the base masks the product’s supports, drawing attention to itself. In addition, furniture lighting makes the room visually more spacious and cozy.
Variants of design of beds with a floating effect
The market offers a wide range of floating beds of various shapes, colors, and styles.
With drawers or a nightstand
Bedside tables and nightstands have become an invariable attribute of a comfortable bedroom. Next to the hovering bed, bedside furniture hung on the wall will look organically to enhance the illusion of levitation in the interior.
With a soft headboard
The hovering bed itself is laconic, so designers actively use a headboard to implement their original ideas. The most popular decor option remains soft upholstery made of tapestry, leather or textile. The upholstery is made in the form of carriage coupler, decorated with rhinestones, photo printing. The role of the headboard can be played by a wall with soft volumetric panels.
Made of wood
Furniture made of solid wood, depending on the decorative treatment, can perfectly fit into any interior. Products with a wooden base are lighter than beds made of MDF or chipboard. This is an advantage for floating furniture, as the lower weight reduces the load on the fasteners and supports.

Double
The levitating bed, thanks to the reliable design of the fasteners, can easily withstand the weight of two adults. The length of the bed is calculated based on the height of the taller person in the pair plus 10 centimeters.
With a lifting mechanism
The lifting mechanism creates storage space at the base of the bed. Unfortunately, this design makes the product heavier and requires additional reinforcement of the supports.

Examples in different interior styles
Initially, floating furniture was intended for minimalist design, loft, hi-tech. But designers have proven that the floating effect can fit perfectly into classic and vintage interiors. A suspended bed looks organically in oriental and Mediterranean interiors, furniture made of light wood is typical for Scandinavian design.
Colors beds
The color of the furniture should match the color scheme of the house or apartment. Monochrome colors are suitable for the base and headboard of the bed: red, brown, beige. Wenge and zebrano have remained in trend for many years. If multi-color backlighting is used, it is better to choose neutral colors such as black, white, gray.
Photos in the interior of rooms
A floating bed will emphasize the advantages of any design direction from classic to eclectic. Original furniture is suitable for apartments and houses with a non-standard layout. For rooms with open zoning, it is better to choose bedroom sets in the same style as the rest of the furniture. When choosing furniture for a child’s room, you should pay attention to the safety of the materials and the reliability of assembly and fastening.
Bedroom
In a separate bedroom, floating furniture will become the dominant interior feature. The floating effect combined with multi-level lighting will create a relaxing atmosphere in the room. Since floating furniture is quite large, you can use the space above its headboard for shelves or cabinets as compensation.

Children’s
As a rule, children are delighted with levitating furniture. The hovering bed will become a favorite place for children’s fantasy games. Dim lighting will calm the child before going to bed and serve as a night light in the children’s room.
Living room
If the sleeping place is in the living room, then the bed should look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Due to the original idea and lighting, the hovering furniture will become a decoration of the hall. The lighting, as a decorative accent, will delicately separate the sleeping area from the living room.
