Doors
Sometimes treasures that any decorator would appreciate are mercilessly taken to the dump, despite their impressive appearance.
Antique interior items can be used in almost any style. Doors that have served their purpose can easily be used in the bedroom, turning them into a headboard.
In addition to old canvases, louvered doors, a figured window frame without glass, and even forged gates look interesting. If the door is light, it can be slightly updated with paint or sanding and fixed horizontally.
Mirror
A mirrored headboard will play a more decorative role, since it will be inconvenient to use the reflective surface for its intended purpose.
A mirror will make the bedroom visually more spacious, add light and a feeling of lightness. This can be a large mirror in a frame, several decorative items or panels that make up a single composition.
Drapery
To make a picturesque headboard from fabric yourself, you will need light flowing fabric and hooks mounted in the wall. If you don’t want or can’t make holes, you can use fasteners that don’t require drilling (“spider” or “creps”).
The headboard will look very impressive and will fit perfectly into the classic style, as well as fusion, scandi and boho.
Carpet or tapestry
Carpets never go out of fashion, but what is really appreciated today is vintage and hand-woven items with an unusual pattern. You can attach the carpet directly to the wall or a wooden slat. The second method will allow you to easily remove the fabric for cleaning.
Patterned rugs, tapestries, appliques and patchwork items will replace the headboard and give the bedroom interior a bright, individual character.
Woven fabric
One of the most popular trends in recent years is the use of natural materials in home decoration. The color scheme of light brown, sand and wood shades has a positive effect on well-being and mood.
To decorate the bedroom with elements of eco-style, you can use woven tatami rugs instead of a headboard or a round jute rug.
Bamboo
An unusual headboard can be made of bamboo trunks, covered with varnish or paint. Do not adhere to strict symmetry when forming a composition: slight disorder will add naturalness to it. Bamboo is a rather active element of the interior, so it is recommended to use it in laconic interiors, so as not to overload the decor.
Instead of whole trunks, you can use their halves, as well as natural wallpaper made of bamboo fiber.
Shelf
What could be more practical and functional than a shelf located directly above your head? This is not only a popular design technique, but also one of the easiest ways to decorate the wall above the bed.
The shelf can act as a bedside table, storing useful little things like a phone, or serve as a stand for decor – paintings, candles, house plants.
Garlands
An interesting accent that creates a festive mood, and in the dark – gives a sense of romance. It is better to use cold bulbs as neutral lighting, and warm ones for a more cozy atmosphere. Garlands with photographs hung on their wires using clothespins look even more elegant.

Pillows
Decorative pillows fixed to the wall look cozy and are useful for those who love read before bed or sit in bed with a laptop. The best option is to use products with removable pillowcases so that they can be removed and washed at any time. Pillows are fixed on hooks or a rail.
Natural wood
The enduring trend of modern fashion – eco-friendliness, which means wood textures and decor made from natural materials will always be relevant. Instead of a headboard, a shield decorated with wood cuts, new or barn boards, as well as a processed slab with uneven edges will do. The last option is quite expensive, but it instantly adds nobility and originality to the atmosphere.
Books
Lovers of printed publications will appreciate such an original headboard decor. The most difficult part of implementing this idea is choosing books of the same format. To save money, we recommend using used publications.
A sheet of plywood is suitable as a base. You can use small nails to attach the books, but it is important to leave 2-3 pages free so that you can glue them later and cover the nail heads.
Pallet
Pallets are consumables used for transporting and storing goods. But in modern interiors they have firmly established themselves as fashionable decor and a base for furniture.
The headboard can be either the pallets themselves, fixed to the bed or wall, or boards connected to each other. Pallets must be processed in advance: washed, sanded and covered with a protective compound: oil, paint or stain.
Macrame
By placing a macrame product on a small cornice or a processed branch, you can easily add a touch of boho to the bedroom decor. If you manage to weave it with your own hands, the headboard will become especially valuable and cozy.
Macrame, the art of which lies in knotted weaving, is the oldest type of handicraft, but today it is especially relevant in interior design.
Pattern
An unusual painting of the wall behind the bed can replace the headboard. You can use the gradient technique, stencils, resort to partial painting or apply a simple geometric pattern. When you get tired of the headboard, you can simply repaint the wall or cover it with wallpaper.
Perforated Board
Perforated boards are often used as a storage system, and if earlier they could be found in garages, today they are a fashionable detail of designer apartments. In the bedroom, it is recommended to use a board made of MDF or plywood: it can be painted in any suitable color, equipped with shelves, hooks and rails.
The advantage of perforated board is its versatility. You can change not only the decor, but also its location.
To prevent small sawdust from falling into the bed, the edges must be sanded and varnished.
If you implement any of these non-standard ideas, the headboard will become the main decoration of the bedroom and give it originality and coziness.
