Types and features of nets
Screens for plastic windows come in different varieties, but the main difference lies in their design and mounting methods.
On contact tape
Velcro fastening is essentially an improved version of double-sided tape: one part of the tape is sewn directly to the canvas, the other is glued (or stapled, if we are talking about a wooden base) to the frame.
You can install the mosquito net yourself. Another advantage is that it can be removed and washed or stored for the winter or when washing windows.
A disadvantage of Velcro fastening is the possibility of peeling off, which creates a gap for insects and reduces the protective capabilities of the structure.
Frame mosquito net
Modern plastic windows are most often equipped with frame devices. They are a frame made of plastic or aluminum profile with a mesh fabric stretched over it.
Despite the fact that this type of protection gained popularity only with the spread of PVC windows, frame webs can be installed on wooden and aluminum sashes.
There are several ways to attach this mosquito net – plungers are considered the most reliable, while Z-shaped hooks are the simplest. There are also loops and corners, we will talk about all the options in the next section.
Roller mosquito net
Protective roller blinds are similar in design to conventional roller blinds, only they protect not from the sun, but from flying pests. They are attached to the outside of the window, when extended, the edges fit tightly to the frame, thanks to special profiles along the edge.
Roller nets are the most convenient in terms of ease of use: you do not have to remove them every fall and return them to their place every spring, allocate space for storage, etc. When protection is not needed, the canvas slides into the “house” and remains there until needed.
Unfortunately, this coin has a downside: if the canvas is accidentally damaged, you will have to replace the entire expensive roller blind.
Pleated mesh
Something in between a roller blind and a roller shutter. The mesh is folded like an accordion, allowing you to clear the window opening if necessary. When the window needs to be closed again, it is enough to pull it out using a special handle.
Pleated mosquito nets are superior to other types in terms of strength, they are more convenient to use, but they are several times more expensive than ordinary ones.
All of the listed options can be ordered in any size, for doors and windows, with protection not only from insects, but also from the sun and pollen.
Installation on a window by types of fastening
Installing a mosquito net on a plastic window is a relatively simple process. You can do the installation yourself, the main thing is to know the nuances of working with each fastener.
See the article on choosing windows.
On plungers
To install a plunger-type mosquito net, you will need:
- The insert itself with plungers.
- Matching inserts.
- Drill.
- Brush seal.
Usually, when ordering nets on plungers, companies install pistons in the through holes of the profile themselves. All you have to do is:
- Transfer the locations of future fastenings to the window frame.
- Drill holes of the required diameter (measure the counter insert).
- Insert the inserts for the plungers into the holes made.
- Glue the seal to the frame.
- Put the mosquito net in place.
Advice! There is a high risk of damaging the frame during drilling, so if you are not confident in your abilities, entrust the installation to specialists.
Using Z-shaped fasteners
The main advantage of this method of fastening a mosquito net is that there is no need to drill the window frame. Nets with Z-shaped metal fasteners are supplied already assembled, all that remains is to insert them into the light openings.
- Turn the structure with the high brackets facing up.
- Holding the handles, pull the mosquito net out of the window, hook the upper fasteners onto the edge of the frame, and lift it until it stops.
- Pull the bottom towards you, hook the lower brackets.
- Lower it.
Remove the insert for cleaning or winter storage in the reverse order – lift, remove the lower ones, move it aside, and remove the upper ones.
On hinges
Mosquito nets on hinges are similar in design to ordinary doors: there are hinges, one part of which is installed on the frame, the other on the sash, a handle and a latch.
What you will need:
- Canvas on a profile.
- Hardware (2 hinges, handle, latch with a strike plate).
- Self-tapping screws 20-25 mm (14 pcs).
- Screwdriver, screwdriver.
- Tape measure and pencil.
First, mark and screw the hinges, handle and latch to the profile. Next, mark the hinges and the lock striker plate on the frame, and then screw them on. Insert the mosquito sash into the hinges, pull the handle until it clicks.
Using special corners
This method is considered one of the simplest and most versatile, and is used everywhere. To implement it you will need:
- Mosquito net on the frame.
- Brackets (2 upper, 2 lower).
- Self-tapping screws.
- A screwdriver or power screwdriver.
Advice! Before installing the mosquito net, you need to make sure that it is made according to the measurements, fits the required opening in height and width.
Let’s start the installation:
- On the outside, along the bottom bar, make markings for the two lower fasteners. The length of the “tail” of the lower ones is shorter.
- Screw the lower brackets, stepping back a little from the edges.
- Drill the upper fasteners to the upper crossbar of the window. Or to the side ones at the top.
- Install the mosquito net: bring it out, insert it into the upper grooves, lift it up to the stop, insert it into the lower ones, lower it to the stop. Done!

On adhesive tape
Features of installation depend on the type.
Universal size:
- The hard half of the Velcro tape is glued to the frame from the inside with double-sided tape.
- The net is applied to the tape, combining one corner and 2 sides.
- Press along the perimeter.
- Cut off the excess.
The custom-made net is made according to the specified dimensions, already has Velcro sewn on the edge, which is many times more aesthetically pleasing than the previous version:
- We wash the frame, wipe dry, degrease.
- Remove the protective film from the sticky part of the tape and stick it to the frame.
- Attach the mosquito net.
A mosquito net is a useful accessory for any apartment or house. Its installation is not difficult, and the benefits are obvious.
