Color Features

To describe the color of Marsala, you need to understand its origin. To get this tone, mix burgundy and brown shades. The finished shade of Marsala is somewhat reminiscent of wine, but it is a little warmer and even redder.

In 2015, Marsala was recognized as the shade of the year by the Pantone Color Institute.

To use the wine color correctly, you need to know its features:

  • Marsala-colored walls visually reduce the space. Like any dark surfaces.
  • Marsala adds a touch of sophistication, elegance, even elegance to upholstered furniture.
  • Red within the range excites and increases appetite, in children’s rooms and kitchens it should be used with caution. But in bedrooms, bathrooms and other rooms with mirrors, the color Marsala is more than appropriate: it improves the tone of the face.
  • A soft undertone will help create a pleasant, calm atmosphere in any room.

The wine shade is used in interior design as the main one – for example, for decorating walls, furniture, and other large surfaces. And as an accent: pillows, curtains and other textiles in a velvet texture look incredibly elegant.

What colors can it be combined with?

If we break down the color of marsala into its components, we get red, blue and brown. Accordingly, the most harmonious combinations will be with these tones in their pure form. For example, a burgundy sofa on a blue wall looks appropriate, although contrasting.

Of course, Marsala also goes well with neutral colors: white, gray, beige, black. In the first case, the background is white, and burgundy is used as an accent: sofa, pillows, curtains.

It is better to do the same with gray and beige: the room will remain light, but it will have a touch of drama.

With black, it does not matter which color will be the main one, the main thing is to consider the size of the rooms. The duo, although neutral, is too dark, so it is suitable only for large areas.

If you are looking for a bright combination with the color marsala in the interior – take a closer look at green. In this case, what kind of room you will get depends on the shade of the latter: with turquoise the interior will be cold, with olive – warm. The combination of red with green on the color wheel is called contrasting and is the most active of all possible.

Marsala colors in the interior can be combined with other red shades – from cardinal and scarlet to carrot. Such a pair is called similar or analogous, it is considered the least active.

In what styles is it appropriate to use?

Initially, marsala in the color of furniture appeared in the classical style. In English classics, marsala echoes the shade of mahogany, favorably emphasizing expensive furniture. It is used for upholstery of armchairs and sofas, in fabric decor, as wallpaper on the walls.

Modern interpretations present the color differently. It has become matte and increasingly decorates walls. At the same time, the finishing does not require additional decor – monochromatic burgundy surfaces are elegant in themselves.

Furniture facades can also be matte: for example, a kitchen or a wardrobe. In fabrics, marsala has remained classic – in velour or velvet on pillows, curtains, upholstery.

Oddly enough, such a rich color has become popular in ascetic styles: scandi and loft. In industrial design, wine velvet creates a contrast of luxury and poverty, in Scandinavian design it stands out against the background of white walls.

Options for use in furniture and decor

From the previous section, it is clear that the main use of marsala in furniture is velor or velvet upholstery. Thanks to the pile, the color looks even deeper and more elegant. It looks great both on its own and in combination with wood and gilding.

A sofa in a marsala shade will become the main accent of any room, armchairs will help to emphasize the details, will suit a neutral sofa. If you need a very minor accent, choose comfortable ottomans.

Marsala favorably emphasizes not only soft chairs, but also strict cabinets. Both matte and glossy textures look appropriate – it all depends on the chosen style.

Wine decor – first of all, fabrics. Heavy curtains reminiscent of a theater curtain, cozy pillows, blankets and even carpets! With the right palette, textiles will create the right mood and make the space cozier.

How does it look in the interior of rooms?

It is impossible to say that Marsala is suitable or not suitable for certain spaces. Everything depends on the option of its use, interior style, color combination.

Bedroom

If you want to paint the walls in Marsala color, then the bedroom interior is perfect for this task. It creates the necessary darkening and coziness, so necessary in this room. The only caveat is that the red undertone can interfere with sleep, but it can be drowned out by cold white, gray, blue, green.

Kitchen

Do wine-colored facades seem too much? Use it in small but significant elements: upholstery of bar stools, apron. Or order burgundy doors only for the bottom row of cabinets, making the upper ones white or gray.

Dark red appliances look stylish and can serve as useful decor.

Hallway

Since textiles and decor are practically not used in the hallway, the only option to use wine color here is to paint the walls with it. It is not necessary to paint it completely – choose one accent side or decorate the lower half with another material (lining, panels).

Bathroom

Considering that plumbing is usually white, marsala will act as an excellent background for it: white on dark always looks advantageous. To prevent the interior from becoming boring, complement it with color green or orange accents.
