Choosing the right location
The first thing to consider when choosing decoration is the type of wall finish. If the room is painted in a single color or covered with decorative plaster, the wall will be an excellent background for a bright accent in the form of an image.
If the room or kitchen is covered with wallpaper with a colorful pattern, we do not recommend placing a modular painting: it will get lost among the prints and overload the decor. As an alternative, you can choose a composition of black and white images.
A painting made of several components looks harmonious if it is placed at the right height – this is approximately 165 cm from the floor along the bottom edge. We do not recommend arranging the decor “by eye”: all dimensions must be verified using a level.
If you place the composition at the head of the bed, above a chest of drawers or a table, then its width should be at least half the length of this object. It is advisable to place it exactly in the center. If you hang a triptych above a sofa, it can take up 2/3 of the length of the back.
You also need to consider the gaps between the elements: the larger the fragments, the further they should be from each other. The optimal distance is from 2 to 4 cm: this will ensure the integrity of the composition.
If the room is small or cluttered with furniture, you cannot hang huge modular paintings. If you need to visually stretch the ceiling, you can place the fragments vertically. A horizontal arrangement, on the contrary, will expand the room.
You can hang a modular painting in two ways:
- using fasteners without drilling
- or using self-tapping screws with dowels, which require holes in the wall.
Depending on the material the walls are made of, you will need either a drill or a hammer drill. Before hanging a modular painting, we recommend that you assemble its fragments on the floor and measure the distance between them.
A composition of three elements is called a triptych, of five – a penaptych. If there are more parts, it is a polyptych. The main reference point for placing a triptych is its central part, and for a penaptych, if it consists of different images, there are many layout options.
In order to fix the modules to the wall, you will need at least one hole for each fragment. Since the composition can be heavy, the fasteners must be reliable.
Options for fastening without drilling
You can hang a picture without nails and screws, using modern devices that are easy to find in construction hypermarkets and online stores. When fixing the fragments, it is important to consider the weight and material of the picture, as well as the surface to which the elements are attached.
Pins, buttons or needles
The most budgetary and simple way to hang an inexpensive modular picture. To prevent the canvases from falling, they must be weightless – with a base made of cardboard or polystyrene foam. A suitable option if the room is decorated with wallpaper or cork covering. Pins and thumbtacks are also suitable for hanging pictures on a painted plasterboard wall.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Lay out the picture parts on the floor, compose the composition and measure the distance between the modules.
- Having determined the position on the wall, outline the central segment with a simple pencil – it will be easier to erase.
- Attach the elements parallel to each other, piercing them with the tip and fixing them to the wall.
Double-sided tape
This is a sticky tape impregnated with adhesive and protected with film. The mount is only suitable for lightweight modular paintings.
How to stick decoration to the wall:
- Cut the tape into several strips about 10 cm long. At least 4 pieces will be needed for each element.
- Remove the film from one side and press it tightly to the frame or stretcher, capturing the corners.
- Remove the protective film from the back side, quickly and carefully press the module to the wall, marked earlier.
Double-sided adhesive tape holds items well on wallpaper, decorative plaster and painted putty, but it is better to refuse such fasteners, if the surface is covered with wallpaper with a textured pattern. After dismantling, double-sided tape leaves noticeable marks on the surface, which become dirty over time.
Liquid nails
This is a durable composition that reliably fixes the product after drying. Before installation, it is important to make sure that the wall is well leveled.
How to hang a modular painting on the wall using liquid nails:
- Place the painting element face down.
- Distribute liquid nails over the entire frame.
- Press the fragment onto the previously marked surface: while the glue is not dry, the module can be moved and aligned. Any remaining composition must be removed immediately.
This option is suitable for decorating a bathroom. Unfortunately, it is impossible to remove a composition mounted on liquid nails without damaging the base – the glue will leave visible marks.
Velcro fastening
This system, presented by the companies “Kreps” and “Command”, is a universal tool suitable for almost any surface: concrete, plastic, wood, glass. Thin wallpaper is not included in this list – it may not withstand the weight of heavy frames.
Modular paintings should be attached in the following sequence:
- Visually determine the location of the paintings, make markings.
- Clean the wall, and degrease if necessary.
- Separate the strips from each other, press the two fasteners until it clicks.
- Turn the paintings face down. Remove one of the green backings and attach the fasteners to the frame. The set should be positioned along the perimeter 2/3 from the top edge of the frame.
- Remove the last backing and fix the painting on the wall, holding it for 30 seconds.
The Command system allows you to place even massive modular paintings on the wall. After dismantling, the fastener leaves no marks. To remove the Velcro, slowly pull the strip along the surface.
Spider mount
This is a simple, but reliable and practical mount for modular paintings, made of plastic. Its round part contains thin metal nails that easily enter wood, plasterboard and brick, but with difficulty – into reinforced concrete. The most popular manufacturer of “spiders” is the Toly company.
To hang hooks and fix a modular picture correctly, you need to act in stages:
- Make markings.
- Put the hooks in the right place, calculating the location of the loop so that the frame covers the nails.
- Carefully hammer them in, without applying force, so as not to damage the plastic part.
The spiders can hold up to 10 kg of weight and leave almost no traces when removed.

Smart holder
A mount for modular paintings that is often shown in advertising, but does not meet all the declared characteristics.
According to user reviews, the fastener does not hold even small posters, although the manufacturer guarantees that the fixator can hold an object weighing up to 2 kg. We do not recommend gluing paintings to wallpaper and wood: it is preferable to use smooth surfaces.
