How to visually enlarge the space?
The main task in finishing a small balcony is to make it more spacious, at least visually. If visually increasing the area is not enough, change the layout of the apartment and attach the loggia to the room. However, this way you will lose an additional, albeit tiny, room. In addition, the cost of work and materials will not be small.
Look at an example of attached kitchens and bedrooms.
To save time, effort and money, we suggest going the other way: visually increasing the area. The main rule is a light color. White is best suited, it has the maximum reflectivity. As an alternative, consider light gray, beige, soft pastel.
Important! Consider the temperature of the shade: warm ones fill the room with sunshine, suitable for small northern balconies. Cold ones, on the contrary, pleasantly cool down, will be appropriate on the southern, south-eastern side.
Another color technique is a combination of light and dark tones. It is used when arranging a small elongated balcony. The short sides are painted dark (any, up to matte black), and the long ones are light.
As in other rooms, the rule in the design of a small balcony is: the higher, the lighter. That is, the floor can be dark – give preference to colors of medium intensity, on wenge parquet or black tiles any debris will be visible.
The lightest surface is the ceiling. On a warm loggia, you can install a stretch glossy canvas, reflective surfaces also increase the space. The walls are either a little darker or match the ceiling.

One of the popular materials for balcony decoration is clapboard. It is inexpensive, practical, and easy to install. Designers recommend painting the clapboard with light paint after installation; the natural wood shade compresses the space in a circle. Alternative finishing materials: PVC panels, decorative plaster, microcement, brickwork, high-quality paint.
Advice! When choosing any building materials, pay attention to the operating conditions, especially if the balcony is not insulated or even open.
What furniture is better to use?
It is impossible to arrange a small balcony without furniture. When choosing cabinets, shelves, armchairs, chairs, tables, give preference to two types: built-in or folding.
For example, it is best to install a built-in cabinet: it allows you to use all the available space in the niche as efficiently as possible and will be more spacious than a standard store-bought one. The only downside is that built-in furniture is more expensive, but you should keep in mind that it will serve you for many years.
If you are going to turn the balcony into a place to relax, pay special attention to the seating. The purpose of the lounge area can be different, hence the choice of seats:
- to drink coffee in the morning or enjoy the view of the night city with a cup of tea, a couple of wicker or folding chairs are enough;
- it will be comfortable to relax with a book on a frameless chair or a lounger made to the width of your balcony;
- it is comfortable to work with a laptop on an ergonomic office chair (as a permanent office) or sitting on a bean bag chair (as a temporary option or for breaks).
Advice! To save space and make the seat more functional, order boxes to fit the niche and put comfortable pillows on top – you can also order them in your size from a furniture company.

The third important element of the interior is the table. Put a cup of aromatic drink, a book, a phone or a work laptop – it will definitely come in handy. In a square loggia, you can make a wide window sill that will simultaneously replace a table and a shelf for something necessary (for example, indoor flowers).

The best solution for a narrow small balcony would be a folding console – it is easy to install when needed, and when folded does not interfere with movement.

Decor options
To decorate a small balcony to the end, renovation and furniture alone are not enough. Decorations are an important part of the interior, but in conditions of limited space, it is better to choose them on a residual basis.
- Is there an empty wall above the chair? Fill it with modern posters, paintings, panels, clocks. If you like to change the composition, hang small shelves for paintings and put whatever your heart desires on them.
- Flower pots will conveniently fit on a table, windowsill, rack, empty shelves. In the warm season, they will be comfortable on the balcony.
Important! When arranging an open loggia, consider placing balcony boxes on the partition – they will decorate the room, taking up almost no space.

- Bright pillows and blankets on chairs and armchairs will be just right – you won’t have to go inside, even if it gets cold outside.
- Garlands, candles, and various lanterns will help create a special romantic atmosphere. By the way, the chandelier can also be unusual.
Features of open and closed balcony design
An open balcony, despite its apparent unattractiveness, can be quite cozy, especially if you live in a warm climate. For northern regions, of course, a cold loggia is rather a minus – it can only be used as a recreation area in the summer.
The main nuance that should be adhered to in all elements: water resistance. It is better to choose tiles or decking as a floor covering, siding will be appropriate on the walls. Furniture will last longer if it is made of plastic, metal or rattan.
Advice! Don’t be afraid to put fresh flowers in the open area – most of them easily withstand rain and wind.

A closed space is more versatile, especially if the small loggia is insulated and equipped with sealed double-glazed windows. Any materials are used in the decoration – both for interior and exterior decoration. The choice of furniture is wider – even an ordinary soft chair or a wooden chest of drawers can be placed on a dry balcony.
Important! Flowers from an uninsulated balcony should be brought into the house when the temperature at night begins to approach zero.
How decorate stylishly and practically?
Designing a tiny space forces you to solve several problems at once: make the interior beautiful, practical and save as much space as possible. Here are some tips to help you develop the design:
- High-rise placement. We usually don’t use the space under the ceiling, but on the balcony it’s quite appropriate: after all, the things stored there are not used that often. And a cabinet up to the ceiling will be much more spacious than a standard 2-2.2 m high one.
- Improved storage. If the height of the walls allows, make a niche above the floor or under the ceiling along the entire length and width. The subfloor is convenient for storing winter or summer tires, and seasonal equipment, such as skis or swimming fins, is on top.
- Compact models. Choose miniature but comfortable furniture. For example, a table 10-15 cm smaller than standard will do its job, saving you a little space.
- Mirrors. Reflection has an expanding ability, why not use this knowledge when arranging?
- Correspond to the view. Do you only see a noisy and dusty street from the window? Protect yourself from the bustle of the city with tubs of plants, creating a balcony in the jungle style. If there is already a forest or grove outside the window, you can abandon houseplants in favor of more industrial decor.
Creating a stylish balcony is easy! Clean the room, do the finishing and put in beautiful furniture – your personal corner of peace is ready!
