Features of layout and zoning

The layout of a narrow children’s room has one big advantage: the rectangular shape, unlike the square one, is literally created to divide it.

What exactly the furniture arrangement will be depends largely on the number of children who will live here and their age category.

  • In a room for one preschool-age child, it is imperative to find a place for a bed and a play area.
  • In a narrow teenager’s room, the play area is replaced with a desk for studying and a corner is organized where you can play a console.
  • A cozy makeup area with a mirror and convenient organized storage of things will not be superfluous for a girl.

Advice! The workplace is often organized under the window if it is on the short side: measure the distance from wall to wall and install a long tabletop-window sill on the brackets. Under it you can place pedestals for office supplies and creative accessories.

A bunk bed will help save space in a narrow children’s room for two children of the same sex. Ideally, it can be placed on the short side. Organize the remaining space at your discretion: for example, install desks along the long walls.

If the window in a long room for boys or girls is on the short wall, on the contrary, the sleeping area is placed with its end towards the opening, and the windowsill is expanded and equipped as a workplace.

If the children are of different sexes or have a large age difference, the interior of a narrow children’s room should include partitions. Visually, they will turn one room into two and each child will have their own personal space. A rack, a wardrobe, curtains, screens, walls made of boards or plasterboard – these are far from all the ways that will help divide the room.

Important! When creating a partition, think about lighting the part farthest from the window in advance: sunlight must definitely get here.

Recommendations for finishing for visual expansion

Don’t refuse to use techniques in the design of a narrow nursery that can visually expand the room. Let’s consider the main ideas that can make the room more spacious.

Stripes

Horizontal wide or narrow guides on short walls (in the form of wallpaper or paint) will visually push them apart. Laminate laid across (not lengthwise!) during renovation, or transverse stripes on the floor covering or carpet have the same effect.

Perspective

Photo wallpaper on long walls with an image of a perspective expansion allows you to create a new reality in an ordinary room. Don’t be afraid to use this technique: it really works.

Color

Decorating two elongated surfaces with light tones and using bright or dark shades on the other two creates the right contrast and changes the geometry of the room.

Light

Bright ceiling lighting with small spotlights instead of a chandelier, coupled with the soft light of floor or table lamps, adds volume, air and increases the size of the children’s room.

Reflection

Mirrors, glossy facades, suspended ceilings, glass, plastic – everything that reflects light makes the room more spacious.

Tip! Do you want to achieve the maximum effect from mirrors? Place the lamps right next to them.

How to arrange the furniture?

5 ways to turn a cluttered children's room into a perfectionist's paradise

Before arranging interior items in the design of a narrow children’s room, parents should learn how to choose them correctly:

  • Give preference to a neutral and maximally calm color scheme. White furniture looks best, suits girls and boys.
  • Order models in a modern minimalist design instead of a pretentious classic one.
  • For small rooms, take airy, compact designs with reduced dimensions.

First of all, decide on the bed and its location. It can help save space by installing it across the bedroom. But if there is a window there, problems may arise in the form of drafts and hot batteries.

The second option is a bed lengthwise. The rest of the furniture in this case is located in one line with it, or in two – if the width of the room allows.

You don’t have to use the floor for sleeping: raise your bed to the ceiling. There will be enough space underneath for playing, studying, and relaxing.

To furnish your work area, first of all, pay attention to your desk. It is best to place it by the window – opposite or sideways. The child will help to choose the side: for left-handers the light should fall from the right, for right-handers – from the left.

What is the best way to organize storage systems?

A narrow children’s room is not limited to just one bed and a desk: so that the child can easily maintain cleanliness and order here, think over functional storage systems for everything necessary.

  • First of all – clothes. Usually a small wardrobe or chest of drawers is enough. The second one will still have to be supplemented with a hanger, because dresses or shirts cannot be stored constantly folded.
  • Next – toys. It is convenient to keep boxes for them under the bed, in the chest of drawers, in separate nightstands. If there is a podium in the room, then the toys are stored under it.
  • The third category is school subjects. You will need shelves for books and notebooks, drawers for pens, pencils, and erasers. To prevent your school bag from lying around the room, you should also come up with a “house” for it.

Most often, a built-in wall is ordered for elongated rooms: cabinets do not necessarily have to go along the entire length of the wall, they can “go around” the table, bed, sofa and other items.

What is important to consider in lighting?

In the previous section, we already mentioned that there should be a lot of light. Or to be more precise, you will need many of its sources. Veto single chandeliers. Instead, it is better to take several spotlights, distributing them evenly across the ceiling.

A table lamp is a must on the desk, a floor lamp in the recreation area, and a night light or a sconce for reading near the bed.

Don’t forget about decorative lighting: garlands or lanterns create a special atmosphere at any time of year.

Choosing the right curtains and decor

The choice of window frame should be made based on its location: on the long wall, the curtains should be inconspicuous and blend in with the decoration as much as possible. On short walls, bright ones are acceptable, attracting attention and “bringing” the opening closer to the opposite wall.

Usually, children’s rooms use curtains from floor to ceiling. But roller blinds or Roman blinds up to the windowsill are also acceptable – this is especially convenient if there is a desk or bed under the window.

Design ideas for inspiration

If you want to originally decorate your baby’s room, take as a basis the presence of a second tier: usually there is a sleeping area on it, but you can also make a recreation area or a play area. On the “first floor” there will be a lot of space, which will be enough for both active games and concentration on studies.

Advice! The right choice for small rooms is minimalism in decoration and furniture. Give up unnecessary decor in favor of functionality and saving free space.
