Planning and zoning

First of all, before starting the renovation, you need to create a drawing of the hallway, which will show the arrangement of furniture and highlight the main zones.

The hallway is usually divided into two or three small areas:

  • near the entrance there is a doorway area where people change clothes and shoes;
  • further on, a place is set up where outerwear and shoes will be stored;
  • at the end of the room, a narrow bench, table or console with a mirror is installed.

In an elongated hallway, you can create several functional zones. This will give it a more proportional outline and use the free space rationally. For zoning a long hallway, a multi-level ceiling, lighting, color highlighting, different wall finishes or flooring are suitable.

To expand a narrow hallway, you can combine it with an adjacent room, for example, a living room. You can make a cramped room larger by increasing the doorways. So the corridor will not only visually become much more spacious, but will also acquire a festive look.

Color scheme

A light color palette that expands the space is best suited for a narrow hallway. In this case, pastel colors can be chosen for long walls, and bright colors for short ones. Thanks to this color scheme, the disproportionate corridor will acquire the correct outlines.

The best option for decorating a hallway is white, milky or ivory colors. Such a background will give the environment maximum comfort and beauty. In order not to overload the design of a narrow room, it is better to choose beige, sand or light brown colors.

Features of finishing to expand space

The most practical solution for flooring is ceramic and porcelain tiles with an elongated wooden texture or geometric pattern. This material is resistant to mechanical stress, moisture-resistant, easy to wash and clean.

In a narrow hallway, two types of flooring are often used. For example, the area next to the door is tiled, and the rest of the space is finished with laminate or parquet. Materials can be in harmony in color or create a contrast for visual zoning.

For finishing the walls of the hallway, it is appropriate to use decorative plaster, all kinds of wallpaper, PVC panels and ceramic tiles with imitation brick or stone. Wall decoration should not be decorated with too voluminous patterns and differ in obvious contrasts that hide the useful and without this narrow area.

The ceiling can be decorated with a stretch fabric, use ordinary white paint or decorate the plane with mirror panels, which will contribute to the visual expansion of the corridor space. Using a two-level suspended ceiling combined with a glossy film makes the walls in the room look much higher.

In a cramped room, it would be appropriate to install doors that open into other rooms. Sliding systems or through openings made in the form of an arch are also perfect.

An irreplaceable detail in the interior of a narrow hallway is a mirror, which can significantly increase the space. It can be located on the wall or built into furniture.

How to arrange?

In a small narrow hallway, it is appropriate to place the storage systems for clothes on the side of the entrance door. With sufficient side space, the space along one wall can be furnished with a small wardrobe with a mirrored facade or other modular furniture. A hanging hanger with a shoe cabinet, a compact chest of drawers or a rack will be perfectly placed near the parallel wall.

In addition to the correct long rectangular shape, the corridor can have non-standard outlines. A similar layout is found in the interior of a private house, where there is a staircase in the hallway. In this case, a minimal furniture set is chosen for the arrangement, consisting of a mirror, a bench and a hanger, which is installed under the staircase.

Combination furniture sets are often found in modern interiors. Models that combine a shoe rack, ottoman, wardrobe, cabinet, mirror, etc. are perfect for real savings on square meters in a narrow interior.

To save usable space, you should use the space around the front door as efficiently as possible. Tall tall cabinets or a stylish mezzanine will help with this.

How to decorate?

You can diversify the design of the hallway by using different decor. For example, it is appropriate to place a hanging shelf with accessories in the corridor. You can complement the decor with original stands with umbrellas, which not only look beautiful, but are also a useful element of the room.

A floor vase will fit perfectly into the corner of the room, and pockets and organizers for keys, combs and other small items will fit perfectly on the walls. The interior of the hallway can be decorated with paintings or photographs. Frescoes are also great.

An original solution would be to install a false window. Such a design technique will give the decor a stylish, modern look and visually expand the area of the room. The opening is complemented with transparent, frosted glass or left open, turning it into an additional shelf for decorative elements.

hallway in the Provence style

A classic style is suitable for a small and cramped space. A distinctive feature of a narrow classic interior is a calm color scheme and furniture with smooth lines. This design does not imply clear geometric proportions and sharp angles.

An interior in the country or Provence style is especially warm. Furniture in calm tones harmonizes perfectly with floral patterns on the wallpaper and stone flooring. Lamps, open shelves and other items with forged details will add unique coziness to the design.

The most optimal style for a narrow hallway is minimalism, characterized by restraint and severity. The design uses only functional items, and the color scheme combines two basic colors.

Recommendations for organizing lighting

For the hallway, you should not choose too massive and bulky lighting fixtures. For a narrow room, miniature and fairly powerful models or compact spotlights that give the space visual volume will be appropriate. The interior can be equipped with ceiling floodlights or swivel spotlights.

A long corridor is decorated with several chandeliers with rectangular or square lampshades. The best design solution is with overhead or built-in lampshades in combination with perimeter decorative lighting.

Wall sconces with a simple configuration, such as a lantern, are suitable as additional light. These devices are usually placed in the area with a mirror.

Interior design ideas

Despite the limited and narrow space, the interior of the hallway can have a presentable appearance and be distinguished by its original design. A well-thought-out design will not go unnoticed and will create a pleasant impression of your apartment.
