Recommendations for creating a layout

Before you start planning a children’s room, you should understand: what kind of furniture should be placed in the children’s room and what zones should be highlighted? The layout of a children’s room for one child should include:

  • sleeping area (bed or sofa);
  • play area;
  • work space;
  • storage space.

In this case, the first three zones in the room are clearly designated, and special storage spaces are organized in them: in the play area, you should think about where the toys will be, in the work area – stationery. A dressing room is separately distinguished among the furniture.

Arrangement of furniture in the children’s room, based on simple logic, will help make the child more independent and organized.

The second thing that requires attention when organizing a children’s room is the ratio of zones. In children’s rooms of small children (up to 6-7 years old), most of the free space is left for games. The dominant area for a schoolchild will be the study area. The wardrobe should also grow as the child grows: even if there are no more things, they will become larger.

Recommendations for furniture placement:

  1. Leave a lot of free space. Especially for active kids – this will eliminate the possibility of injury.
  2. Move the bed away from the radiator. The location of the sleeping area in the room away from the window is a guarantee of respiratory health.
  3. Place the headboard of the bed opposite the door. A sleeping child should be able to see the front door — this is a nuance of psychological comfort.
  4. Place lighting in each of the zones: a bright table lamp in the work area, a night light on the wall or furniture in the bedroom.

A place to sleep and rest

We start arranging the furniture with the queen of the room — the bed. Ergonomics and safety of a sleeping place depend not only on the choice of a comfortable model:

  • to avoid colds, the sleeping area in the layout should be moved away from the window;
  • to ensure safety, you should exclude sockets, switches, lamps directly above the mattress.

Important! There should be no open shelves, cabinets, or other storage structures above the sleeping area. For safety and psychological comfort, it is recommended to leave the walls empty.

You can leave only the bed as a place to rest. But if the dimensions of the room allow, add a comfortable pouf or armchair, which will be convenient to sit on during breaks between active games or exercises on the Swedish wall. The pouf is placed between the bed and the play or study area.

You can store nothing in the sleeping area, or arrange a wardrobe for clothes – in this part of the room, bulky furniture is most appropriate.

Important! A dressing table for a teenage girl is installed near the bed, so the owner of the room can comfortably start and end her day.

Play area

The brightest, most cheerful part of the nursery is the play area. Depending on age and preferences, furniture for it can look different:

  • doll houses with children’s kitchens for girls;
  • garages with cars for boys;
  • sports corner, dry pool for active children;
  • a shelf with books, board games for calm, assiduous ones.

The correct arrangement of furniture and the equipment of the playroom is also based on age: preschoolers have much fewer toys than schoolchildren or teenagers. For the latter, the playroom is removed altogether or replaced with a media area with a console.

Important! To prevent toys from spreading all over the room (and apartment), the playroom is not made as an afterthought (play where there is space left), but is included in the project from the start and its territory is limited.

To separate the play area from the sleeping or study area, cellular shelving units are used as partitions – it is also more convenient to store toys and children’s books in them.

Helpful advice! Organizing proper storage of things means putting the bulk of things at the child’s height level. This way, the child will be able to get the items himself, return them to their place, and the nursery will always be tidy.

There is no optimal set of furniture for games – everything depends on the personal preferences of the children. In addition to shelves with drawers for toys and bookcases, it is advisable to place a bean bag chair or a frameless pouf for quiet games, and also lay a carpet – it will minimize impacts in case of possible falls.

Work area

Arranging furniture for comfortable study is a responsible task. Let’s start with the equipment of the nursery. Standard set for the study area:

  • desk + chair or ergonomic growing desk;
  • computer or laptop;
  • pencil case, cabinet, cabinet for school supplies;
  • comfortable chair, bean bag for doing oral assignments.

writing desk in the nursery

If the child studies not only in a regular school, but also in an art or music school, a corner for studies is also organized here. Designate a place in the work area for a musical instrument or easel, add the necessary furniture.

The workplace can and should be placed in the room near the window. In this case, the desk is not placed opposite the opening, but installed sideways: for left-handed people, the window is left on the right, for right-handed people – on the left.

Organizing storage systems

Proper arrangement of furniture goes hand in hand with organizing storage. Allocating a separate area to cabinets and storing everything from notebooks to out-of-season clothes in them is wrong. It is much more ergonomic to arrange furniture according to the principle of use:

  • racks for toys in the playroom;
  • bedside tables or shelves for books and notebooks in the workroom;
  • clothes and other personal belongings in the bedroom.

storage in the nursery

Storage should be safe and suitable for the child. You shouldn’t put your little child’s favorite toys on the top shelf of the furniture – it’s better to place seasonal or not the most necessary things under the ceiling.

Placing the items your child needs on the lower shelves will allow him to get what he needs without fear of falling off a chair or dropping something on his head.

Features of planning for children of different sexes

Creating a room for a girl and a boy is one of the most difficult tasks in design. Parents of two children of different sexes should adhere to the following rules:

Personal space for everyone

It is advisable to zone the room not visually (with color, light), but physically – put up a static blank partition, a rack or a portable screen. So that everyone can fence themselves off from their sister or brother.

Combining zones

It is better to replace a bunk bed for a girl and a boy with two separate pieces of furniture, and divide the play area in half: toys for the girl on one side, for the boy on the other, and a common area without furniture in the middle.

But the work area, if the room layout requires it, can be combined: put tables next to each other along or opposite each other. The main thing is that everyone has their own desk.

Arrangement of cabinets

Even if you need to save space and make one large cabinet instead of two, it should be divided inside: each should have their own shelves, hangers, drawers.

Recommendations for children of different ages

No less the problem is arranging a nursery for children of different ages. In fact, you will have to organize two separate rooms in one room that meet the needs of each resident.

nursery for children with an age difference

If the age difference is large, a play area is always allocated for the younger child, and a study area for the older child. The work area in the room should be closed off as much as possible from the play area so that the baby does not interfere with the activities of the older brother or sister.

But the sleeping areas in the room can be combined! If it is too early for the younger one to sleep on a bunk bed, install a loft bed for the older child, and place the baby’s crib underneath it. Choose a loft model that later allows for the installation of a regular-sized bed underneath.

What to consider for a small children’s room?

Transformable furniture will help arrange interior items ergonomically, without cluttering the furnishings. Items that can take several forms at once: for example, a table-bed, a folding chair or lounger, a folding table-mirror, etc.

Zoning a small children’s room is often done vertically: the bed is tucked under the ceiling, and furniture for games and study can be placed under it.

To correctly arrange furniture in a child’s room, carefully study the child’s home “scenarios”: his behavior and habits will tell you which area requires more space, and what can be abandoned.
