Where is the best place to place a bedroom?

The location of the bedroom depends on the layout of your home. If the estate is two-story, the master bedroom is placed on the second floor. There are several reasons for this decision:

  • due to the distance, you will not be disturbed by noise from the first floor;
  • foreign odors from the kitchen will not penetrate into the bedroom;
  • the temperature on the second floor is usually higher than on the first.

One of the disadvantages of placing the bedroom on top is the need to go up and down the stairs. Therefore, if the rest room is intended for elderly people, it is better to leave it on the first floor.

The second location option is an insulated attic. Many owners of country houses have fallen in love with it for its unusual shape. Sloping or slanting ceilings look stylish and allow you to create an interesting interior. In addition, the attic area allows you to place a bathroom or study next to the bedroom. Another advantage of this layout is that it saves space on the floors.

Owners of one-story houses are advised to move the bedroom to the farthest and quietest corner. At a minimum, this is your protection from noise and odors, at a maximum, this room is practically not used during the day and easy access to it is not necessary.

The ideal location of the windows is southwest, overlooking the courtyard. This way, you will not be disturbed by sounds from the street or the road, and you will not have to wake up with the sunrise. At the same time, the room will be light.

Are you just planning to build a house or are you choosing a suitable room in a finished one? Pay attention to its size. 14-16 sq. m is enough to accommodate a large bed, bedside tables and even a wardrobe. 10-12 sq. m is enough for one family member. In rooms over 20 sq. m, the bedroom can be combined with a dressing room, study or creative studio. Various zoning methods can help to separate the zones.

Features of zoning

Bedrooms, in which people plan to do more than just sleep, need zoning regardless of their size. Physical (partitions, screens, shelves) and visual (light and color) methods are used to separate the space. Let’s consider the most popular options for bedroom design in a private house.

  • Furniture. Although blind cabinets cope with the task, they look too bulky. More suitable in this situation are through-shelves, beds or sofas with backs.
  • Texture. For example, wooden beams behind the bed, and brickwork or wallpaper around the work area.
  • Color. Designers recommend highlighting the main area in the room. Contrasting textiles on the bed or a painted wall behind the headboard would be best.

  • Light. A large chandelier can hang over the bed, spotlights or directional spotlights near the closet, and a floor lamp or sconce in the reading area.
  • Finish. Use different materials for the floor, walls, or ceiling to emphasize the boundaries. The downside of this method is that you can’t rearrange the furniture without renovation.
  • Screens. Any physical dividers are suitable for large bedrooms. Install a stylish screen or hang a curtain, for example, to separate the dressing room.

What to decorate with?

Whatever color scheme you choose, remember: it should be comfortable. Overly bright colors do not allow the eyes and brain to rest, which means you risk getting chronic fatigue syndrome.

To avoid this, pay attention to calm shades. White, gray, and sand are considered universal. Light tones are used in bedrooms of any size, but are especially recommended in small spaces.

In large bedrooms in a private house, if desired, use dark shades – graphite, chocolate, coffee.

It is not necessary to create a monochrome bedroom interior, feel free to use colored pastel, soft or muted tones. Olive, blue, peach, yellow, mustard, powder – if used correctly, any of them will serve as an excellent base or accent for the bedroom.

After choosing the color palette, we move on to choosing finishing materials:

  • Walls. The most popular options are still wallpaper, paint and decorative plaster. However, the decoration of the bedroom in the house can be much more original. In a log house, leave the beams bare, decorate the walls with clapboard or panels. If you like stone, use it, or brick if you prefer the loft style.
  • Ceiling. Most often, they paint, whitewash or stretch. In a wooden house, it is also decorated with contrasting beams to create a cozy atmosphere. The same technique is often used in attics.
  • Floor. The warmest and most natural is made of parquet boards. In order to save money, it is replaced with parquet or laminate. Eco-friendly and pleasant to the touch cork flooring will perfectly complement the interior of the bedroom in the house.

Choosing and arranging furniture

The design of a bedroom in a private house requires a careful selection of furniture. Quality furniture should be environmentally friendly and durable.

You should start equipping your bedroom with a bed. When buying it, do not skimp on the mattress: the quality of your sleep, as well as the health of your spine, depends on it.

The location of the bed depends primarily on the layout of the bedroom and its future content. In a rectangular room, the bed is placed along the long wall, leaving a distance of ~80 cm for passage. In a square room, place it against any wall, but not opposite the window. To make room for a dressing table, computer desk, or chest of drawers, the bed is moved relative to the center.

It is recommended to select bedside tables, a dressing table, a wardrobe and other pieces of furniture to match the bed you have already purchased. To prevent the bedroom from seeming cluttered, opt for oversized, lightweight designs. Replace classic nightstands with tables, and dressing tables with a console.

If you have a separate dressing room, install a small chest of drawers in the bedroom – it is convenient to store sleepwear and underwear, as well as bed linen.

A spacious sliding-door wardrobe is suitable for organizing a wardrobe in the bedroom. Install it on one side of the door (if it is on the side) or on both sides (if the entrance is in the center). This way, the bulky piece of furniture will be almost invisible.

It is convenient to place a desk or a place for reading – an armchair and a bookcase – near the window.

Lighting arrangements

Natural light in the bedroom can be a nuisance, so blackout curtains are a must-have. They block sunlight and help you sleep comfortably even during the day.

Artificial lighting includes a central pendant light. In large rooms and classic interiors, this role is performed by a large chandelier. In small and modern ones – a minimalist lampshade on a pendant or a flat LED lamp.

As additional light sources, use bedside lamps, spotlights above the work or dressing area, floor lamps in the corner for reading.

What style can you use for the interior?

The bedroom should not stand out from the overall style of the house, but it can have its own twist.

If you are planning to renovate a wooden house, emphasize the naturalness of the materials using techniques from the country or Provence style. The white Scandinavian design goes perfectly with wood and will look especially good in a bedroom with windows facing north.

Snow and ski lovers will love the unusual chalet style. The main role in it belongs to the wooden finish, and it is emphasized with the help of dark colors, a fireplace, cozy blankets and skins.

For adherents of new trends, a laconic modern style is recommended. It is characterized by muted and “dirty” shades, functional furniture and minimal decor.
