Mold
Mold is the hardest thing to clean. It eats into the structure of the material and fills the entire space. Only long soaking with chlorine, table vinegar, or citric acid and active mechanical cleaning with a brush with coarse bristles will help.
Soaking solution recipes:
- 400 g citric acid powder + 10 liters of hot water;
- 10 caps of “Whiteness” or “Domestos” + 10 liters of hot water;
- 1 liter of table vinegar + 3 liters of warm water.
You need to soak for at least 6 hours, then actively soap the mold stains with laundry soap and rub with a coarse brush until they disappear completely.

Rust
You don’t even need to soak the curtain to wash off rusty stains. It is enough to rub it intensively with a sponge soaked in one of the liquids:
- Cleaning agent with added alkali (Sanita, Comet);
- 150 ml of ammonia + 50 ml of hydrogen peroxide.
It is necessary to leave the cleaning solution on the surface of rusty stains for 10-15 minutes and rinse thoroughly with running water.
A milamine sponge also works well.

Lime deposits
Lime deposits make the surface of the curtain unpleasant to to the touch, it can change color due to impurities contained in tap water and greatly spoil the overall appearance of the bathroom. The technology for removing limescale deposits is simple: soak the curtain for an hour or an hour and a half in a special solution, rub with a sponge or brush and rinse.
Vinegar or citric acid dissolves the deposit well:
- 50 g citric acid + 5 l hot water;
- 7 tbsp 9% vinegar + 5 l hot water.
To consolidate the effect, at the end you can rub the dirty areas with a mixture of any bath detergent and baking soda.

You can’t do without soaking.
Other stains
Other stains can also appear on the shower curtain: from body creams or hair dye. You can get rid of them with a simple automatic washing.
Before washing, it is better to study life hacks.
You need to wash with liquid detergent at a temperature of 30-40 degrees on a gentle or delicate wash mode, without spinning. Place a couple of terry towels in the drum along with the curtain; they will increase friction during washing and help remove stains faster.
Only fabric or vinyl shower curtains can be machine washed.
It is impossible to completely prevent new stains from appearing on a shower curtain, but you can delay this moment. After performing all the manipulations, the clean and dry curtain should be placed in a warm saline solution for 30 minutes, then thoroughly dried again and used as usual. Additionally, you can wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth after each shower.
