Types of stretch ceilings in the kitchen

Depending on the material from which the stretch ceiling canvas in the kitchen is made, they are divided into two main types:

• PVC ceilings;
• Fabric ceilings.

In addition, there is a variety of surfaces on which the external qualities depend. They can be textured or smooth. In accordance with this, the canvases are divided into:

• Glossy;
• Matte;
• Satin;
• With photo printing.

You can choose any color, or order a metal coating, or even a translucent one – this makes sense to create special lighting effects. Let’s take a closer look at each of these types.

Glossy

Perhaps this is the most suitable option, since glossy surfaces are the easiest to care for, they are easy to wash, they do not absorb grease and dirt and do not retain them on the surface. Gloss reflects light, which makes the surface of such a ceiling closer to a mirror in properties. It helps to increase illumination, the kitchen seems more spacious.

• Visually increases the room, its height and volume;
• Increases illumination;
• Has a wide range of possible colors;
• Characterized by a long service life without loss of appearance;
• Provides reliable protection against leaks.

Such ceilings are successfully used in various interior styles, both the most modern and traditional, such as Provence or country. The color is chosen based not only on the style of interior design, but also on the size of the room. As with the selection of other finishing materials, in small rooms it is worth using light colors, while spacious rooms allow the use of dark, saturated shades.

Matte

Externally, the matte ceiling will not differ from the usual one, plastered and covered with paint. The light, reflecting, will be softly dispersed throughout the room, without creating glare or zones of different illumination.

The only drawback is that the kitchen may seem a little lower than it actually is.

The main advantages of a matte stretch ceiling:

• The color of the ceiling is perceived as uniform due to the absence of glare;
• Suitable for any interior style;
• The seams on the canvas are invisible, which makes it possible to install large-area ceilings at one level.
• They make the room more cozy, “homey”.

Satin

The properties of such ceilings are close to matte ones, but they do not have their drawback: they reflect light better, and thus visually increase the height of the room. The shine of satin surfaces resembles the play of mother-of-pearl, aesthetically it looks very beautiful in the kitchen interior.

• Mother-of-pearl shine adds elegance to any interior;
• The kitchen seems more spacious;
• Illumination increases;
• The seams on the canvas are invisible.

With photo printing

Any image can be applied to the material from which stretch ceilings for the kitchen are made. This is done using photo printing. A competent selection of drawings for application can completely transform the room, correct its proportions, make it lighter or, on the contrary, remove excess light if the kitchen faces south and has large windows.

Popular “star” ceilings in kitchens are usually inappropriate – fruit motifs are more suitable here. The image of a blue sky with light clouds or flying birds allows you to “remove” the ceiling completely, which immediately changes not only the visual height of the ceiling, but also the entire perception of the interior.

All the considered types of ceilings belong to the first type and are made of PVC film. Is it possible to make stretch ceilings in the kitchen of the second type, that is, from fabric? In principle, this is possible if the exhaust system above the stove works well, and a minimal amount of soot and grease gets into the air.

However, it is impossible to completely eliminate contamination of the ceiling, and the fabric from which it is made is much more susceptible to both odors and grease stains than film. In addition, they are more difficult to care for; in this case, simply washing with a detergent is not enough. Therefore, fabric ceilings are usually used in rooms such as living rooms or bedrooms.

Color of the stretch ceiling in the kitchen

There are no restrictions when choosing the color of the ceiling, it can be white, beige, red, even black – it all depends on the customer’s wishes. However, it is worth studying the advice of designers on choosing a color scheme for the room if you want the kitchen ceiling to look beautiful.

• For high rooms, choose darker shades for the canvas.
• Light tones of the ceiling canvas will help to visually increase the height of the room, it will seem more spacious and lighter.
• Warm tones add coziness, but at the same time “narrow” the space.
• Cold shades “move away” the surfaces in which they are painted.
• Choosing contrasting shades for the ceiling and floor looks impressive, but can visually make the room smaller.
• Large patterns on the ceiling are appropriate in large kitchens, in small ones it is better to refuse such a design.

Stretch ceiling design in the kitchen

The ceiling design should not contradict the other elements of the room’s decoration. If the kitchen is designed in a classic style, a “starry sky” ceiling or images of animals on it are unlikely to be appropriate. In this case, it is better to opt for a matte canvas of a calm tone – milky, pearl or light beige. For a high-tech kitchen, it is better to choose a glossy or metallic canvas.

If the kitchen is divided into several functional zones, you can emphasize the zoning with a stretch ceiling at different levels above different zones.

Stretch ceilings are not an obstacle to hanging a beautiful chandelier or fixing spotlights. Special embedded systems, which are attached to the ceiling and covered with a stretchable fabric on top, will provide a strong support for the lamps. They can be used to mount spotlights or hooks for hanging chandeliers.

You can use any lamps, you just need to install fasteners for them in advance.

Tip: The chandelier can be fixed at any time, and even done without the involvement of installation specialists. In the place where it needs to be installed, a plastic ring with a diameter smaller than the decorative bowl under the mount is glued to the stretch fabric with special glue. Next, the inner part of the ring is cut through, a hook is fixed in the ceiling in the usual way, and the chandelier is hung on it.

Stretch ceiling in a small kitchen

If the kitchen is small in size (usually such in Khrushchev-era buildings), you need to be especially careful when choosing a color scheme for its design, as well as follow the advice of designers who will help make your kitchen visually larger:

• Choose the same color for the stretch ceiling as for the walls – but a different shade;
• Avoid large photo prints, the only exception is an image of a blue sky with light clouds;
• A glossy surface will help make the kitchen visually more spacious and slightly “raise” the ceilings due to the play of reflections;
• In small rooms, multi-level structures of complex shapes are hardly appropriate, it is better to use a straight canvas.

Pros and cons of stretch ceilings on kitchen

When choosing a ceiling for the kitchen, it is important to evaluate all the pros and cons of stretch ceilings.

• Easy installation that does not require expensive, lengthy and “dirty” work with plaster and paint;
• Prevention of “flooding” from neighbors above (PVC fabric can hold up to one hundred liters of water per square meter);
• The ability to secretly lay communications and wiring;
• Fire safety;
• Long service life without loss of quality – about twenty years;
• Ability to choose different designs.

• Material under tension can be easily damaged mechanically – by puncturing or cutting;
• On large areas, connecting seams may be visible, especially on glossy canvases;
• For some time after installation, the canvas emits an unpleasant odor;
• At least five centimeters are “eaten away” from the actual height of the ceiling.

Advice: In a large kitchen, it is better to use matte or satin ceilings – the seams are not so noticeable on them. If you plan to install a glossy ceiling, it is better if it is located at different levels – this will make it possible to do without visible seams.

In order for the ceiling to serve for a long time, it needs to be looked after. Periodically, the canvas is washed with ordinary soft products that do not contain abrasives. Grease stains can be removed with a slightly acidic solution of acetic acid or lemon juice. At least once a month, the ceiling needs to be wiped.

Tip: a dull gloss will shine again if you wipe the ceiling with ammonia, and then with a damp cloth.

Also, a stretch ceiling can be used if there is a gas stove in the kitchen, since the melting temperature of the ceiling is more than 50 degrees, which is unlikely, given the distance from the stove to the ceiling. In addition, almost every kitchen has a hood, which absorbs all the heat.
