Pros and cons
To choose the right ceilings for the bedroom, you need to clearly understand what effect you want to achieve. Therefore, let’s consider this material from all sides, so that the decision is balanced and we do not have to redo everything. For convenience, I have prepared a table, study it:
- Quick installation, which will allow you to finish the repair faster.
- You can visually adjust the size of the bedroom. If you have a low room with a small window, you can make it lighter and higher using white glossy ceilings.
- A large selection of colors and design solutions.
- Ease of maintenance and cleaning.
- No need to level the base.
- Neat edges.
- Requires professional installation.
- Loss of room height.
- Compared to paint, there is a smaller choice of colors.
- High risk of damaging the stretch fabric (for example, when moving furniture).
- Not all types of lighting can be installed.
Which design should I choose?
According to their design, stretch ceilings can be of three main types:
- single-level,
- two-level,
- multi-level (three or more levels).
When installing any ceiling, precious centimeters of room height are “eaten up.” If the ceiling is single-level, the loss will be five to seven centimeters, a three-level ceiling will “take away” twice as much. This should be taken into account when planning a renovation.
Single-level ceilings are a universal option for a modern bedroom of any size, which looks stylish. For small and low rooms, this is perhaps the best solution. They look great in any interior style and compare favorably with other types due to their budget price.
If the bedroom is quite large, two-level stretch ceilings will help to visually highlight functional areas, for example, a reading area, an office, or the main area – sleeping. In such cases, the canvases located at different heights may differ in both texture and color scheme.
Complex multi-level structures, including three or more planes, are used in large bedrooms when they want to add volume to the room or highlight the sleeping area, making it more majestic.
What texture better?
The material used to make stretch fabrics may differ in surface texture. There are three of them:
- glossy,
- matte,
- satin.
See the comparison of textures.
Glossy is sometimes called lacquered – its surface has a very high reflection coefficient, comparable to a mirror – up to 90%. A narrow and low bedroom becomes visually twice as high if you use a glossy canvas for its decoration. In addition to the size, the illumination also increases.
Matte ceilings look great in the bedroom – a classic option suitable for everyone without exception interior styles. Externally, it is no different from ordinary painting and can be done in any design.
The reflectivity of matte stretch surfaces is low, but they diffuse light well, distributing it evenly throughout the room. A big plus, especially for classic interiors, is the absence of glare that distracts attention. In addition, this is the most budget-friendly option of all available.
Satin ceilings look similar to regular matte ceilings, but their surface is silkier. The texture imitates natural fabric. Its reflection coefficient is higher than that of matte, but it does not glare and does not interfere with the perception of the interior.
It is possible to combine two textures in multi-level ceilings – the part located directly above the sleeping area can be made of glossy material, and the rest – of matte.
What color to choose for the bedroom?
When choosing a color, you must adhere to three basic rules:
- The color of the ceiling should be in harmony with the overall color scheme of the bedroom interior;
- The color scheme should have a positive effect on the psyche;
- Consider the preferences of the owners of the room and the style.
The classic option for a bedroom is white. It goes well with any other colors, gives a feeling of purity, and visually increases the space. However, in some cases, white can be perceived as too cold, uncomfortable, “official”. In such cases, I recommend considering warm tones – milky, ivory, and others.
Blue, green, and pink tones have a relaxing effect, and therefore are well suited for bedrooms. Red, orange, and yellow tones, especially bright ones, excite the nervous system, so they are usually not used in rooms intended for relaxation. Brown shades can have a depressing effect on the psyche, just like black.
I also advise you to consider the effect of color on the perception of the room as a whole.
- In a low bedroom, the ceiling should be light and the floor dark, this will “add height.”
- It is better to make very high ceilings dark to avoid the “well room” effect.
- If the windows face north, warm tones for the ceiling are preferable, and vice versa.
- It is better to decorate small rooms in uniform tones, but the shade should change from darker at the bottom of the room to lighter at the top.
- It is also worth using relief plinths to divide the space.
In addition to plain canvases, try decorating your bedroom with stretch ceilings with photo printing, which allows you to create exclusive interiors and bring to life the most unexpected fantasies. The choice of designs is practically unlimited. However, it is worth considering that over time they may become boring, and then you will have to redo the repairs, which is quite expensive.
What style can it be used in?
This type of finish will suit almost any style – you just have to choose the right type of canvas. Below I will tell you about the correspondence of types of ceilings to different styles.
For a bedroom in a classic style, matte or satin canvases of white, as well as ecru, ivory, cream, milk, cold snow shades are suitable. You can choose both single-level and multi-level ceilings, but preference is given to monochrome single-level options. For decoration, they use stucco moldings, ornate baseboards and chandeliers.
For neoclassicism, they usually choose matte canvases of subdued colors that strictly match the range of other interior elements. Use simple geometric shapes when creating ceilings at different levels.
As a rule, minimalist bedrooms have white or black ceilings. The texture can be any: matte or glossy. Contrasting ones in relation to the walls are also possible – but only if the room dimensions allow it.
For a modern bedroom design, ceilings of all types of textures, painted in different colors, and for the bolder ones, also options with photo prints are suitable. Multi-level suspended structures are acceptable, but without excesses.
White is suitable for a loft matte ceiling or with photo prints “brickwork”, “old boards”, or “concrete surface”. Such options are made only single-level.
Satin ceilings, matched to the tone of the interior, will make ethnic and rustic (Provence, country) styles more expressive. An abundance of levels and decorative elements is allowed, if the style requires it.
Lighting features
Light is a subtle tool that can easily change the mood of the interior, show its advantages and hide its disadvantages. Recently, a lighting scheme that includes three lines of lighting has been considered classic:
- upper, fill light,
- middle line – wall lamps,
- and “lower” lighting, which includes floor lamps and table lamps.
In addition, such additions as lighting of furniture, sections of walls and even the floor are possible.
Light will help change the visual dimensions of the room, make it larger, higher, and even out the proportions. A row of lamps located along the short side will visually lengthen it. A wall that is too narrow will seem wider if you highlight it with bright lighting. All modern devices that ensure the operation of lighting schemes and the creation of various lighting scenarios can be used even if the ceilings in the bedroom are suspended.
Important: Avoid incandescent lamps – they emit too much heat and can have a negative effect on the PVC film. It is better to choose LED or energy-saving modern lamps.
How does it look with a chandelier?
Classic chandeliers can be installed anywhere, one condition – the installation location must be determined in advance, before the final installation of the stretch structure.
Examples with spotlights
A great option for creating a zonal lighting. With the help of built-in lamps in the bedroom, you can highlight the work or dressing area. They are used to create fill light, and to highlight individual sections of the room, and to emphasize the division into functional zones.
Ideas for floating ceilings
To create this effect, a special profile is used, into which the lighting is installed. It looks quite stylish – the lighting creates the illusion that the ceiling is flying. However, this solution is usually more expensive than the standard one.
Design ideas
You can equip a two-level structure with lighting by installing a special box around the perimeter of the entire room. An LED strip embedded in it will create stylish ceiling lighting, which will visually increase the height of the room. The box can be replaced with a special polystyrene cornice.
The “Starry Sky” lighting scheme is designed specifically for stretch ceilings in a child’s or adult bedroom. Holes are made in the canvas – future “stars”, and light sources are installed on the ceiling.
Too large a room can be made more cozy and intimate if you use a matte stretch canvas of dark shades. Multi-level ceilings will make it possible to organize the space, implement interesting lighting schemes, and create unexpected effects. Let’s take a closer look at the possible options.
