What is it?

So, what are textured paints? This material creates or imitates a relief surface. In fact, the technique of applying decorative paint lies somewhere between decorative plaster and regular paint (especially when it comes to creating texture).

It differs from standard paint:

  • Consistency. The decorative coating is thicker, somewhat reminiscent of very thick sour cream.
  • Composition. In addition to the base and pigments, filler particles are used in the production, which are responsible for the volume.
  • High consumption. The layer of textured dye can reach 15 mm, while the usual one is 2-3 mm.

Differences from decorative plaster:

  • Application thickness. A thinner layer of paint is required.
  • Consumption. Due to the reduction of the layer, the material consumption will naturally be less.
  • Textured paints for interior decoration can create standard plaster effects (bark beetle, fur coat, lamb), or imitate marble, velvet, leather, silk, embossed paper.

Pros and cons

To decide once and for all whether to buy textured paint, evaluate its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • Do not require careful preparation of the walls. Due to the volume, the coating hides small irregularities.
  • They dry quickly. A 5 mm layer dries in about 3-4 hours.
  • Suitable for any walls. Concrete, brick, wood, plasterboard.
  • Can be tinted in any shade. As usual, they are usually released in white, digital or manual tinting allows you to achieve different shades.
  • Do not have a detrimental effect on health. Most of the compositions are hypoallergenic and safe – they can even be used in children’s rooms, bedrooms.
  • Inexpensive. The average price is around 100 rubles per 1 kg.
  • They last a long time. The service life of paints from different manufacturers varies, but on average is ~ 10 years.
  • Do not crack. Textured paint is elastic, so even if the house shrinks a little (relevant for new buildings), cracks will not form on the surface.
  • Do not fade. Due to which it is suitable for use in rooms with southern and eastern windows – the original color will be preserved for the entire service life.
  • Easy to clean. Firstly, the walls will have an antistatic effect – they will not attract dust. Secondly, most dirt can be removed with a damp soft cloth.

Cons:

  • High consumption. About 1 kg per 1 m2. However, this is justified by the low price of the paint itself, as well as savings on wall preparation.
  • Difficult to remove. If you get tired of the volume and decide to glue wallpaper or apply a smooth coating instead, be prepared for a difficult dismantling process.

Important! The pros and cons are considered for water-based compositions, the properties of other mixtures may differ from those listed.

What types are there and their characteristics?

Various components are added to the composition of paints for interior work:

  • chips of durable stone (marble, granite);
  • quartz sand;
  • silk, cotton fibers;
  • mother-of-pearl;
  • starch;
  • metal glitter.

As a result of mixing, unusual structures are obtained:

  1. Mizuri. The composition is applied in a thick layer, after which deep lines are created with fingertips or a notched spatula – smooth or straight. Thick paints with modified starch are suitable.
  2. Marseille wax. Based on the name, you can understand that the paint will need to be with the addition of wax. However, they are rare and expensive. It is easier to take the usual version with chalk chips and cover it with wax for decorative surfaces. The result will be a wall that imitates stone.
  3. Relief. The familiar lamb or fur coat from decorative plaster can also be created using paint: take those with large stone chips.
  4. Atacama. The effect of a rough coating with streaks is achieved by adding sand. The play of light is emphasized by mother-of-pearl dyes.
  5. Silk. The surface is smooth and glossy, thanks to cellulose or silk fibers (natural). The pearlescent shine is achieved with the help of a dye.

The base can be acrylic (modern, easy to use), silicone (suitable for any surface), silicate (used for exterior and interior decoration).

What colors are there?

Textured paint for walls has a rich color range, primarily due to the wide tinting options. Most manufacturers of building materials produce paints in a single white color, allowing the buyer to choose the shade that best suits the design.

Important! To be able to repeat the color, order a computer tint in the store, or write down the proportions in grams, selecting the tone manually.

If the wall is covered with white paint, the volumetric effect will be almost unnoticeable: to preserve the airiness of the finish, but emphasize the texture, after drying, use the technique of painting with a dry brush or sponge.

Textured paints in most interiors are made light: beige, gray. The palette suits many styles: Scandinavian, classic, minimalism. Loft lovers will love the deep, rich shades: black, indigo, burgundy.

The accent on the painted wall is made with the help of original, unusual shades: blue, pink, lilac (look for examples in the photo). For a greater effect, experts recommend covering the walls with textured paints with pearlescent, metallic effects.

Recommendations for selection

Painting the walls is preceded by the purchase of a paint composition, and the purchase is a careful selection of its variety. Choosing paint for the walls in your apartment will be easier if you answer 5 questions:

  1. Which room in the house are you planning to renovate?
  2. What is the surface of the walls in the room (concrete, wood, plasterboard)?
  3. What condition are the walls in now, is it necessary to mask small irregularities?
  4. What kind of finish (glossy, matte) and pattern do you want to get after application?
  5. Will the work be done by yourself or by a professional?

Choosing textured paint is complicated by the fact that the packaging does not indicate what effect in wall decoration can be achieved with its help. Usually, only the type of filler is indicated. For example, solutions with chalk, starch, and tiny crumbs are suitable for mizuri.

In order not to make a mistake with your choice, to buy exactly the color and effect that you need, ask for help from a consultant in a specialized store of finishing materials. It is best to show the seller a photo of the desired effect, so it will be easier to choose the composition.

Features of application

First of all, prepare all the necessary tools and materials:

  • primer;
  • roller or for primer;
  • spatula or roller;
  • film to protect furniture, floor, ceiling;
  • masking tape to separate the area to be painted.

Preliminary preparation includes cleaning the walls from old material, plastering, puttying the necessary areas (or the entire surface). Next, the technology requires priming: the solution is selected to match the base (acrylic to acrylic, silicate to silicate). The primer has a protective effect against moisture, fungus, bacteria, improves adhesion.

When the primer has dried (it is better to wait at least 12 hours), you can apply textured paint. Bright lighting will help you do this correctly: it is advisable to turn on the light that will be the main one in the room (a chandelier or ceiling lights).

Textured paint is applied with a wide spatula, and a narrow trowel is used in the corners. Interesting volumetric effects require a layer of at least 3-4 mm. The method of creating texture depends on your imagination and skills: make strokes with a spatula, brush, needle or fur roller, or fingers.

Important! Water-dispersed textured paints dry quite quickly, so you need to work in small areas, immediately creating the desired relief on them.

What does it look like in the interior?

The scope of application is extensive. They are mainly used to decorate walls in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways. But water- and wash-resistant compositions are also suitable for kitchens and even bathrooms.

rust effect on walls

The solution is selected to match the interior style: complex Marseille wax will become a wonderful background for classic carved furniture or chic Empire and Baroque styles. A more restrained modern style will suit mizuri in a light neutral shade: white, gray, beige.

In the loft style, atacama will be appropriate: roughness can imitate concrete, plaster or rust on metal.

The second important factor is the functionality of the room. For children’s rooms, colored pastels are chosen for all the walls. Or one of the surfaces is made bright, accented, and the rest are light. Flat “warm” effects are suitable: silk, paper.

In bedrooms, the coverings should be neutral, but it is acceptable to play with volume: make pleasant mizuri waves or add the relief of a fur coat, lamb.

For the kitchen – the less relief, the better: dust, dirt, grease will accumulate on the ledges, which are difficult to wash off.

A room where there are no restrictions is a living room. Volume and plane, bright and calm shades, glossy and matte effects are appropriate. Textured paint is selected based on size: the smaller the room, the lighter and shinier the coating should be.

Using textured paint is always an experiment! It is almost impossible to predict what exactly will turn out in the end. But a little skill and a little imagination will help to achieve an excellent result!
