Hide unnecessary
Often the attractiveness of the interior is lost among the abundance of things and unnecessary furniture. Leaving clothes, children’s toys and wires in sight, apartment owners deprive their main room of coziness.
Visual noise arising from clutter quickly tires and makes the room smaller. We recommend leaving only what you are truly happy with and reflects your character on display: the rest should be hidden behind cabinet fronts or given to new owners.
Look for ways to improve your storage system – use the space under the ceiling and sofa and reorganize the contents of the closet to free up as much space as possible.
Transform Furniture
When you are in the living room, look around and decide, what elements do not suit you or even irritate you. Perhaps it is a shabby chair, a bulky wardrobe that does not fit into the light environment, or an old chandelier. If you do not plan to replace the furniture expensively, try to remake it:
- reupholster it using thick fabric and a stapler;
- repaint cabinet furniture, priming it with a high-quality compound and covering it with durable paint (optimally – odorless acrylic enamel);
- transform a chandelier by painting it from an aerosol can.
Many elements can be improved with your own hands. By using online master classes and using your imagination, you will get a more original and stylish living room.
Use natural materials
Plastic and laminated surfaces do not add coziness, as they seem artificial, but often you can’t do without them. To make the living room seem more welcoming, dilute it with wooden details (inexpensive solid pine furniture, an accent wall made of paneling, slat decor).
Brickwork and imitation natural stone are also suitable. Don’t forget about textiles and details: instead of polyester, it’s better to buy cotton or linen products, and instead of plastic containers, buy baskets made of natural wicker.
Arrange plants
Indoor flowers will help complete the natural theme: even if you are not confident in your abilities, you should not give up green spaces. They relieve stress, purify the air and add volume to the room.
Beginners can choose for themselves unpretentious plants that do not require special care, but delight with their beauty and make the living room feel lived in.
Decorate the sofa with textiles
A soft blanket that is pleasant to wrap yourself in and elegant pillows that enliven a boring sofa will bring into the living room atmosphere of homely warmth. We recommend purchasing a blanket with a minimum of synthetic additives, otherwise it will quickly become covered in pellets or begin to accumulate static electricity.
And you can save on pillows with removable covers that are easy to wash and change according to the seasons.
Decorate an empty wall
Family photos, postcards and children’s drawings hung on the walls of the living room will instantly make the room cozy and familiar.
If you are skilled in macrame weaving, decorate the wall with a panel made of threads, and if you want to expand the space, collect a collection of small old mirrors and fill the free space with them.
Set up a reading corner
When decorating a cozy living room, it is worth using zoning: the room can be divided into sections using furniture (a cabinet, a shelving unit or a sofa), color (by painting the walls in different tones), and lighting. A corner with an armchair and a floor lamp, arranged near the home library, will become a pleasant island for a quiet rest.
If it is possible to convert the windowsill into a reading area, take advantage of it: this detail will not only become the highlight of the decor, but will also add a couple more seats for guests.
Change the curtains
New thick curtains will help transform the interior in just a few minutes. If there are many small details in the living room, choose a plain fabric, and if you want to liven up a strict setting, hang colored curtains with patterns.
Do not buy curtains that match the walls: if the elements merge with each other, the room will lose expressiveness.
Put down a rug
A soft rug will make the living room more attractive and warmer. Products with long pile made of combined materials warm more and look cozier. But carpets made of artificial fibers are easier to care for: they do not absorb unpleasant odors.
If you have a woolen Soviet carpet hanging in your apartment, take it down from the wall and put it on the floor: you will not only be on trend, but also decorate your living room in a new way.
Install a fireplace
A real fireplace in a private home is a luxurious detail, as well as a guarantee of soulful evenings. But apartment dwellers are not deprived of choice, because there are several solutions for city housing:
- an electric fireplace with imitation of fire and the sounds of crackling fire;
- a bio-fireplace with a safe flame;
- a false fireplace in the form of a portal. You can make this decor yourself by filling it with candles or laying out a garland.
Revise the lighting
If there is only one chandelier hanging in the living room, you should not expect it to be cozy. Distribute local lamps by functional zones, providing spot lighting:
- place a floor lamp near the sofa or in the reading corner,
- hang a LED strip behind the TV,
- place a table lamp on a nightstand or in a mini-office.
Pay attention to the temperature of the light: warm lamps are much more suitable for cozy evenings, and neutral ones for daylight. Cold light quickly tires and does not create a feeling of comfort.
Put some candles
The final touch is to add candles, which will add some magic to the living room. Hygge lovers have long been using this recipe: on cold evenings, such simple details create a soulful and romantic atmosphere.
Choose beautiful thick candles, with which you can create an interior composition and leave it in sight – then the desire to light them will arise more often.
As we can see, you don’t need a lot of money to create coziness: if you add some The living room has a soul, things and furniture bring joy, and both guests and household members love to gather in the room – it can rightfully be considered the coziest place in the world.
