Should you use tulle for windows?

A room without tulle can seem unfinished, uninhabited, especially if the curtains are made in a laconic style. Thin lace fabric gives the room airiness and lightness, protects from bright sunlight during the day and disguises a dark window late in the evening – the latter looks like a “black hole”, causing discomfort not only for children but also for adults.

A window opening complemented with tulle not only decorates the room, but also covers an unsightly view from the window, as well as unevenness and distortion of the glass. Tulle masks dust, drops and stains if they appear too often, and it is not possible to wash the window as dirt appears.

The thin fabric covers old frames and distracts attention from the heating radiators: even if they are modern, not everyone likes their “technical” look.

Pros: protection of materials

The benefit of tulle is not only in its decorativeness: it is a practical solution for those who want to protect wooden flooring, laminate, wallpaper and furniture from the effects of ultraviolet radiation.

If the windows face the sunny side, then without tulle, which diffuses light, light spots will appear on the natural wood floor within a couple of years. stains from burnt wood. Wallpaper can fade even earlier, and the durability of the laminate will depend on its quality.

Cons: inappropriateness

Despite all the advantages of tulle, sometimes it is worth choosing blinds, roller blinds or Roman blinds. If the stove is located close to the window, we do not recommend using fabric curtains, especially light ones, for safety reasons.

You should also consider the style of the interior: in a modern interior, lace fabric can look ridiculous, so choose a laconic material without patterns.

In houses decorated in the Scandinavian style, you can often find windows that are completely free of textiles, however, this option is not suitable for everyone.

The less light enters the room, the gloomier and it seems tight. Tulle is a thin fabric, but it still blocks natural light. The difference is especially noticeable after the curtains are removed from the windows for washing.

Consider the density of the material you buy if you can’t do without it: for poorly lit rooms, choose a light veil or organza.

“Bare” windows are good if they offer a luxurious view or green trees. The gaze slides further, creating the impression of open space. Unfortunately, always drawn tulle does not allow you to fully enjoy the scenery.

By blocking off the window opening with curtains, you deprive the room of additional space that can be used usefully. A wide window sill can become a recreation area, turn into a table or a mini-greenhouse.

When choosing tulle with a pattern, keep in mind that a large ornament also steals space.

Cons: dust and dirt accumulate

If you are a stickler for cleanliness, any fabric on the windows may seem unnecessary to you. Frequent touching of it (for example, for watering house plants) threatens to cause dark spots from hands.

Unlike blinds, tulle cannot be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a rag – curtains must be removed, washed, dried, and sometimes ironed. It is most difficult to care for them in the kitchen, where the fabric actively absorbs odors and grease.

Tulle is still in demand in interior design, because its use has many advantages. The decision whether to hang it or not depends on the living conditions and individual preferences of the apartment owner.
